This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate.)
UPDATE ON FULL-TEXT SEARCH
FamilySearch has announced that Full-Text Search has moved from being experimental to becoming part of their standard search tools. You can now find it as one of the options under “Search” on the main menu, as well as through the all-collections search on the FamilySearch home page (when signed in) and in the FamilySearch Catalog. Full-Text Search accesses nearly 2 billion records, many of which are not yet formally indexed and searchable otherwise. Sure beats hunting down a film and spending hours going page by page to find things (although you’ll probably spend those same amount of hours searching with Full-Text Search. It’s a game-changer! NC ANCESTORS?
The New Bern Historical Society in North Carolina has made available its new Digital Archive available to all on the society’s website, with over 2,500 historical photos and images. They plan to continue to add to the archive, including historic documents and other artifacts. Photos include both places and people: the “New Bern Social Groups” collection includes groups of people in many situations – workers, social clubs, religions groups, sports teams and even kindergarten playgrounds. Peruse the collections here: https://archives.newbernhistorical.org/s/Archive/page/welcome
NEW AI ART TOOL
Google recently introduced a powerful new, free AI image generation too in their Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model, also known as “Nano Banana.” Lisa Louise Cooke has created a really wonderful video explaining how to use this tool, WHY to use this tool, and includes some very important suggestions for responsible use. https://lisalouisecooke.com/2025/09/05/nano-banana/
