This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
GRIGSBY ANCESTRY?
The National Grigsby Family Society and its 501(c)(3) Foundation offer free Y-DNA testing for African American or Native American individuals with the Grigsby surname to help determine whether they are genetic Grigsby descendants. Regardless of test results, the society may also assist Grigsby-connected individuals with African American or Native American heritage in locating slave records and related family-history details from its extensive records. Interested individuals may email grigsbyfoundation@gmail.com to learn more. More about the society at https://grigsby.org
FREE DATABASE UPDATED
American Ancestors has added more volumes to their New England Historical and Genealogical Register database, which now holds over 2.2 million searchable names, with results including document images as well. The Register has been published continuously since 1847 by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, and contains compiled family genealogies, transcribed primary sources, and expert research strategies. To check it out, I tried a quick search (as a guest—it is available to everyone) on one of my stubbornly difficult ancestors and have now added several possibilities to research on my to-do list! Search for your New England ancestors here: https://www.americanancestors.org/search/databasesearch/202/new-england-historical-and-genealogical-register
NEW BOOK + FREE OFFER
In their upcoming book Changing The Ending: How Writing Your Life Story Transforms Your Life, biographers Rhonda Lauritzen and Rachel J. Trotter, of Evalogue.life, show how personal and family narratives help keep memories alive and build deeper family connections, providing clear tips for interviewing relatives, organizing ideas, and incorporating historical context into ancestor stories. They’re thanking those who pre-order the book (release date Dec. 15) with free access to their “Print or publish your story” Workshop (a $99 value). Details and instructions on how to pre-order and claim your free workshop at https://evalogue.life/changing-the-ending/
MAJOR UPDATES & CHANGES AT ANIMAP
AniMap LLC, has officially launched version 5.0 with major updates to its very helpful historical mapping tool, and they’re replacing the subscription model with a one-time contribution (which provides full access and all future updates at no additional charge). Some of the big changes, many inspired by user feedback, include streamlined county search and the ability to search nationwide for a county name to find matching current and former counties (even if no longer existing) in any US state. You can also now create notes directly on the map view, set map markers with a simple point-and-click, and a new centralized data management system organizes your additions across all your sessions. Training videos are also being added to help users navigate the new features. You can find more information at https://animap5.animap.us.
RESEARCH RABBIT HOLE ALERT
Hat tip to the Godfrey Library (a fabulous resource, themselves) for mentioning the Library of Congress’ U.S. Local History [Digital] Collection in their recent newsletter. While many of the titles are available elsewhere, the LoC has organized and made them easily searchable by location. (Of course in checking this out I’ve added even more to my to-do list!) From the main page of the U.S. Local History Collection, go to the Location section in the left sidebar and choose More Locations. Then choose Alphabetically to find the available collections by cities, counties, and states. (The default is “Number of Matches” for some reason). Or just go here: https://www.loc.gov/collections/united-states-local-history-collection/index/location/?sp=1
HOUSEKEEPING: UPCOMING CHANGES
ConferenceKeeper will be changing email providers a little later this month. I’ll still be sharing helpful genealogy news and information, upcoming deadlines, and the link to the list of newly added events for the week, but the design will be slightly updated. Hopefully this will all go smoothly, but by or after about mid-August, if you don’t see your weekly email in your in-box on Saturdays by 2:15pm Eastern, perhaps check your spam folder. If it’s not there either, please let me know via the Contact form on the website or email directly to info@conferencekeeper.org.
