This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — just good info of interest to genealogists!)

1926 IRISH CENSUS

On April 18, 2026, the National Archives of Ireland will release the 1926 (First) Census of the Irish Free State online for free, making over 700,000 household returns fully searchable. The National Archives of Ireland is planning events, including workshops and presentations for family and local history enthusiasts. They’re also searching for “Centenarian Ambassadors”—people still living who were recorded in this census—to share their stories. More at https://nationalarchives.ie/news-and-events/census-1926/

HOLOCAUST HISTORIES AND MYSTERIES INITIATIVE

The Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at the Center for Jewish History this week launched “Histories and Mysteries,” a new project to resolve unanswered questions from the Holocaust. The initiative combines professional genealogical research with public collaboration to uncover hidden identities, reunite families, and bring closure to long-held family mysteries. Genealogists and the public are invited to participate by submitting their own family stories and contributing clues to help restore histories lost during this era. You can read all about it at https://cjh.org/histories-mysteries

FAMILYSEARCH 2025 HIGHLIGHTS

FamilySearch’s recent blog post recounts genealogy highlights of 2025. Along with adding over 2.2 BILLION new searchable names and images, they made a lot of really significant tech updates like the full release of its popular Full-Text Search tool, improved FamilyTree merging and Data Quality scoring, updates to the Family Tree mobile app, and a record-breaking global turnout for its RootsTech 2025 conference. Read the details at https://www.familysearch.org/en/blog/familysearch-year-in-review-2025

SOCIETY STRENGTHENING

The Stanly County Genealogical Society (NC) is again hosting a series of special virtual programs this year called “Ideas of How to Save my Genealogical Society,” designed for board members of active genealogical societies to discuss the challenges societies are facing today. The goal is to have an open dialogue about what’s working for successful societies, including strategies for finding new members, using social media effectively, and creating activities that members enjoy. For more information and to request an invitation, email pcollins.anc@gmail.com. Please include your name and email to send the invite to.

CALENDAR UPDATES!!!

A few new books have been added to both the Fiction and Non-fiction lists this week. If you’ve published a genealogy-related book, I’d be happy to add yours to the lists as well! If you’re looking for some new research sources and ideas, or just a good book to curl up with, check these lists. You can find them under the “Other Events & Opportunities” tab on the website.

This coming week I’m finally going to be switching the calendar over to list events by their start times, so events will appear on the calendar in order by date then time, and will appear correctly in order, in your time zone. (if all goes well, you’ll no longer see a list of time zones in the description). I’ve already updated the Submission form — entries now request an end date and time (if you leave it blank, it will default to the same date as the start date with an end time one hour after the start time). The “going forward” part is the easy part… Next I will update the existing events which will be the tricky and time-consuming part. So please have patience if while I’m working on this you might see a ton of double entries for a day or two. If anything looks super wonky, or just plain wrong, please be sure to let me know! Email info@conferencekeeper.org or via the Contact form on the website.
