This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)

UPDATES TO FAMILYSEARCH CUSTOM TREES

FamilySearch has made their recently added private Custom Trees feature easier to manage with a new “Manage Trees” page that brings GEDCOM uploads, shared user trees, and private family group trees into one place. From there, you can update settings, review possible profile matches, or upload a new GEDCOM file. Custom trees are completely private and separate from the FamilySearch Family Tree, which is publicly collaborative (See James Tanner’s post here for instructions on how to set up your private tree on FamilySearch.)

IGRA: 4 MILLION RECORDS

The Israel Genealogy Research Association’s All Israel Database (AID) now includes more than 4 million searchable records from archives and publications in Israel, with many entries connected to original scans when permission allows. The database includes records in Hebrew, English, and other languages, with names converted between Hebrew and English to help researchers who might not be familiar with the original language. This month’s update added two new databases and updated five more, with over 26,620 new listings, many with images. For details and to search the records, visit https://genealogy.org.il/AID/

CITIZENSHIP GLITCH

Canada’s federal immigration agency recently recalled hundreds of new citizenship certificates to re-examine the documents submitted as proof of eligibility. Evidently although the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) application allowed color copies or digital scans, it also required vital records to come from a government civil registry or church authority, a detail many folks missed. Some applicants used digital records from genealogy platforms like Ancestry and FamilySearch instead of official certified documents, so now their new Canadian citizenship is in a kind of legal limbo. Citizenship has not been revoked, just put on hold so to speak. Immigration experts advise future applicants to obtain ancestral records directly from official civil registries or vital statistics offices. For more details see https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadian-citizenship-certificate-suspensions-9.7235451
