FREE SYMPOSIUM FOR FAMILY HISTORIANS
In recognition of Mental Health Month, the National Genealogical Society, Vivid-Pix, and FamilySearch invite everyone to attend the Symposium on Healthy Aging and the Role of the Family History Community, on May 22, 2025 from 1:00 PM–5:00 PM ET with free online access via Zoom. The symposium tackles increasing challenges facing Americans as they age, and will include discussion on how the family history community can help our communities and the aging population. Please register in advance for this free online program here.
NY RECORDS UPDATE
Thanks to public input at the urging of groups like the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and others, the proposed section in NY state’s budget legislation that would have essentially banned public access to all vital records and indexes has been removed. A new bill, S.7782, is in the works to direct the New York State Department of Health to work with a private partner to finish digitizing all of the state’s historical birth, marriage, and death records and put them online with searchable public indexes.
FREE DNA KITS FOR HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS
Earlier this year the Center for Jewish History announced a partnership with Ancestry.com. which provides free DNA kits for Holocaust survivors and their descendants, as well as other resources. To register for the free DNA kit, visit https://cjh.org/ancestrydna. For more details about the partnership, see the article in The Jewish Press of Tampa Bay, here.
CEMETERY TOUR
Just announced this week is a tour of Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA, on Sunday, July 13. The tour is sponsored by the Association for Gravestone Studies (AGS) and hosted by the GRIP Genealogy Institute. The cost of $40 includes a guided trolley tour and a AGS guide, refreshments, and a cemetery-related goody bag. Everyone is welcome to sign up — this isn’t limited to GRIP attendees. You will need to have either a member or free account with NGS (National Genealogical Society). Seats are limited to sign up soon. Full details and registration info here.
NGS CONFERENCE UPDATES
The NGS 2025 Family History Conference starts this week! There’s still time to register, both for in-person or for virtual access to all recorded sessions. All registrants have access to the Compendium, virtual expo hall, the conference community via the Whova app and more. Don’t miss out on all the incredible genealogy education and camaraderie this conference offers.
CONFERENCE APP – Registered attendees, both in-person and virtual need to be sure to download and log into the Whova app on your computer and/or on your smartphone. The app has all the conference information, including event agenda, session handouts and slides, plus fun ways to connect with other attendees even before the event.
PLANS CHANGED? If you’re looking to buy or sell a ticket to any of the events that are sold out, there’s a Community Board for that within the Whova app! Go to the “Community” section, then click on the “From organizers” tab where you’ll find a board called “BUY/SELL Conference Event Tickets.”
