WEBTEMBER IS COMING

Every September, Legacy Family Tree Webinars hosts their annual online genealogy conference, Webtember, which consists of several live webinar sessions every Wednesday of the month. This year, each Wednesday’s webinars will follow a different theme: German genealogy, writing your family history, U.S. historical records, and MyHeritage Day. Not only are the live presentations free to attend, but you’ll be able to watch the recordings through the end of the month for free (not the usual 7 days). Register in advance at https://familytreewebinars.com/

SUPPORT OUR SUPPORTERS

You’ll notice a LOT of new sidebar ads on the website starting this weekend! Many are NGS member organizations taking advantage of their free 30-day ad (just one of many NGS organization member benefits). Sidebar advertising must relate to genealogy, which, if you’re reading this, is probably one of your interests 🙂 Please take a minute to check out all these promotions – learn about major events, cool genealogy software and tools, and even a big book sale! Just click on the ads to find out more.

NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

GENTECH TOOLBOX: Next workshop: September 25 – “Power Prompts: Strong Prompts Matched to the Right Model for Genealogical Tasks” with Toolmaster Steve Little. Recordings for four of the previous workshops are available. Full details and registration are at https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/genealogy-courses/gentechtoolbox/

NEW OrgCONNECTS: NGS Organization members and delegates are invited to the upcoming OrgConnects, “Outreach and Partnerships for America at 250 and Beyond,” on September 17 at 8 pm ET via Zoom. The program will feature a discussion with Marion Noble, Made By Us Youth250 Bureau; Madeleine Rosenberg, American Association for State and Local History; and Allison DePrey Singleton, Allen County Public Library. Organization delegates and admins should check their email for registration information (sent yesterday, Aug. 29), or you may email Kate Smith at NGS for information.

CULTURE CONVERSATION: NGS is hosting a Culture Conversation with Michael O’Malley on Wednesday, October 8 at 8 pm Eastern. This even is open to all. Michael O’Malley is a Professor in the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University, and is the author of The Color of Family: History, Race, and the Politics of Ancestry, which discusses changes made to citizens’ names and relationships over generations, and how they affected families as they navigated what it meant to be “white,” “colored,” “mixed race,” and more; as well as how the documents that establish identity came about, and “how private companies like Ancestry.com increasingly supplant state and federal authorities—and not for the better.” Register for the live Zoom event here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/dOU7mKijQJOW-r4US9MJ0A

KEEPING UP WITH NGS: You can always find the latest news from NGS here in our newsletter, but if you can’t wait for the weekend, you can read all the news and more on the National Genealogical Society blog, Upfront With NGS. Don’t miss one of the most recently published articles, “They Came Through Ellis Island…Right?” which discusses Ellis Island and other possible ports of entry that our ancestors may have passed through.

INDIVIDUAL MEMBER BENEFITS: Have you checked out all the benefits of individual membership in the National Genealogical Society lately? Just a few are the NGS Magazine, the scholarly journal National Genealogical Society Quarterly (NGSQ), the free Family History Skills online course, a free subscription to NewspaperArchive.com, databases, discounts, and still more! https://pxl.to/NGSindmember
