DOG DAYS

My week has gone to the dogs, quite literally. We adopted a new pound pup this week – an 8 month old Dalmation mix – and no sooner had we gotten out of our car once home, he pulled free and bolted.  We chased him until we lost him in a local garden center (closed for the day), and spent the night worrying. For once Facebook had some real value, as someone called us the next morning after seeing one of our posts on local Lost & Found pages — she had eyes on our pup in a field right next to the garden center! Since the pup didn’t really know us and was afraid of anyone trying to come near,  I called a friend who just happens to be a K9 Tracker. She worked her magic and within the hour we had our pup safe and sound at home. By afternoon, after a big bowl of food and a comfy new bed, he had taken his place as part of our family.

So – How, you might ask, does this relate to genealogy? Here’s my secret superpower… I can take most any topic of conversation and quickly and covertly steer it to family history. And here’s the connection: If Facebook helped me find my dog, surely it can help you find your ancestors, right? A new webinar on the calendar this week will help with that “Family History and Social Media” presented by Sacramento California FamilySearch Center (April 18, Free), and on April 1 Social Media for Genealogists presented by the Northwest Suburban Genealogy Society. To go one step farther, also on the calendar, on April 11 at 7 pm Eastern, the Gold Coast Public Library is having a free webinar entitled DNA for Dog Lovers! You’ll “learn about the science behind both human and dog DNA testing, ethnicity and breed estimates, pedigree analysis and health markers. Learn to apply what you know about genetic genealogy to find your dog’s littermates, and close relatives. Using examples from dog and human DNA, get a better understanding of your dog, and your own genetic genealogy results with this introduction to genetic genealogy.” Sounds like fun to me, although I’m already pretty sure my new dog has a lot of greyhound in him 🙂

DATE CHANGE

The Working with WATO (What Are The Odds?) event from Leah Larkin PhD, The DNA Geek, has had a slight change of date. Originally on the calendar as April 4 & 5, it has been rescheduled to April 11 & 12.  If you’d like to learn more about this tool at DNApainter that helps you figure out where someone with an unknown parent fits into the family tree of their DNA matches, register for one of the two sessions (same presentation, just different times on each day). Leah’s programs are limited to a small group, and allow opportunities for you to ask questions during and after. You can easily find her events on the ConferenceKeeper calendars by simply searching with the word “Geek.”
