GRIP 2027 ANNOUNCEMENT

Just announced Friday: GRIP Genealogy Institute has released its 2027 course lineup, with 15 great courses planned, led by genealogy experts: 8 virtual courses June 21-25, 5 in-person courses July 11-16, and 2 very special Fall virtual courses in September-October (Dr. Thomas Jones is returning to GRIP!). More big news is the location of the 2027 in-person courses: the Genealogy Center at Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana! Visit https://grip.ngsgenealogy.org for the courses and instructors, and the latest information. Be sure to check back soon as the site is being updated with full course details.

FREE LAW GUIDES

Jeniann Nielsen, PLCGS, has created plain-language historical law guides for every U.S. state, covering laws from settlement through 1950 that can help explain marriage, probate, land, tax, and court records. Researchers can learn about such topics as legal marriage ages, parental consent, common-law marriage, inheritance, guardianship, property rights, deed requirements, and poll taxes; the guides also link to sources so findings can be checked against the original laws. Check out this excellent free resource at https://ldsgenealogy.com/historical-laws/

VIRTUAL LIBRARY CRAWL

While there are many excellent benefits to being an individual member of the National Genealogical Society, special events like the one coming August 19 may be top of my list. This upcoming MemberConnects! program will be a virtual library crawl featuring genealogy libraries and collections from across the United States. Attendees can join breakout rooms to learn about each participating library’s unique holdings, access procedures, and research tips, as well as ask questions of the library representatives. Unlike some MemberConnects programs, this will NOT be recorded. 15 libraries have confirmed already – come and learn what they can offer your research! Members can register using the link sent via email. Consider joining NGS soon because you don’t want to miss this! https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/join-renew-membership/

FREE MEMBER BENEFIT

Did you know that your individual membership in the National Genealogical Society (NGS) gets you free access to NewspaperArchive—a database featuring over 280 million historical newspaper pages? The most recent post on the UpFront with NGS blog details step-by-step instructions on how to log in, search, and download digitized records. The Upfront blog is available to everyone – https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/

AUGUST DISCOUNT

American Ancestors is offering $25 off membership in August with promo code Aug26. Members have access to searchable databases such as NewspaperArchive, 19th Century U.S. Newspapers, and The New York Times, plus publications including American Ancestors magazine and The Register. Membership also includes discounts on courses, research-for-hire, books, and publications, as well as free admission to American Ancestors in Boston, including the Brim-DeForest Library, the Wyner Family Jewish Heritage Center, and their family history collections. https://hubs.americanancestors.org/august-2026-membership-sale

SKUNK SPRAY

I received an email this week from Rhonda Lauritzen at Evalogue.Life, explaining the details of their free workshop offer (mentioned last week), and laughed out loud that she’d included a recipe for an effective skunk-smell wash for pets (but I quickly filed it away!). Well now that I mentioned it, I probably ought to share it here too (if you’ve ever needed it, you’ll file it away too!).
1 quart (4 cups / ~1 liter) of fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide (use a new, unopened bottle if possible)
¼ cup baking soda
1–2 teaspoons liquid dish soap
