This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)

FREE ACCESS TO AU & NZ RECORDS

In honor of Anzac Day, MyHeritage is opening up 2.4 billion historical records from Australia and New Zealand for free through Sunday April 26. This includes 353 collections, with military records like the Anzac Memorial and the Australian World War II Nominal Roll, along with newspapers and vital records. Access the free collections at http://myheritage.com/oceania .

NEW DATABASE

Fold3 announced a new collection on their site this week: Arkansas WWI Discharge Records (1917-1919), documenting the service of over 70,000 soldiers, sailors, and Marines. It’s free to search, but to view the records found in your search results, you’ll either need a Fold3 account, or a visit to your local FamilySearch Center (or public library with the FamilySearch Center designation). Find one nearest to you at https://www.familysearch.org/en/centers/premium-sites

CALLING ALL MAPES

We need to know who you are! Mapes Family Association is now in the continuous process of reconstructing its lost database. Without your family data, it will not be recorded anywhere and will be lost which is a great concern to the Mapes Family Association Board members. We need family members who have not yet done so, to gather information about their parents and grandparents (connecting them to the Mapes line), their siblings, children and grandchildren, and forward it to Harold Mapes, Registrar, by e-mail: hmapes@hotmail.com or by USPS to 545 Alison Drive, Apt. 3, Hummelstown, PA 17036. You can also submit the Mapes_Genealogy_2023 form found at https://sewardhomestead.org/william-mapes/mapes-genealogy-form/ by email or USPS.

CK FOR THE WIN

Congratulations to Arun Konaur, who was recently awarded a research grant from the American Society of Genealogists for his proposal to create instructional materials aimed at helping educate people about Genealogical Bioinformatics. Arun shared that he might not have applied for the grant had he not seen it listed on ConferenceKeeper, which makes the news especially meaningful. Arun also gives presentations to groups; if you’re interested he can be contacted at Arun@DiscoveringNewAncestors.com

SCRIBE AI

MyHeritage announced this week that their recently released Scribe AI is now available on their mobile app. Scribe AI “transcribes handwritten and printed text, translates records, and interprets images to extract meaningful genealogical insights” – on everything from documents, old photos or even headstones. Full details are available on the MyHeritage blog. https://blog.myheritage.com/2026/04/scribe-ai-now-available-on-the-myheritage-mobile-app

News from the National Genealogical Society

DNA DAY! April 25 (today) is DNA Day, celebrating the discovery of the human genome in 1953, and NGS has a helpful new blog post on how DNA testing can open new doors in family history research. It also highlights classes, publications, videos, and conference sessions for anyone who wants to learn more, whether you’re just getting started or ready to dig deeper into genetic genealogy. All are invited to read the UpFront blog at https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/2026/04/dna-day-2026.html

Taplin, CG; Dawne Slater, AG, CG; and moderator Jeanette Sheliga. If you’re planning to attend the NGS 2026 Family History Conference, this session will also help you prepare to research at the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center in Fort Wayne (plus you can get a special badge ribbon for using PERSI in person!). Members should have received an email with the link to sign up; otherwise members may contact Email Kate Smith.
