The National Genealogical Society‘s latest benefit for Organization Membership, the AI Interest Group Support Program, continues October 26 with its first train-the-trainer session. A leader or small group from each member organization can receive practical coaching from NGS AI Program Director Steve Little and materials that can be used to help their organization teach AI responsibly through an AI special interest group or similar program. A REVOLUTIONARY NEW TRANSCRIPTION VIEWER

This week Fold3 introduced a new state-of-the-art, patent-pending Transcription Viewer which pairs nicely with their full-text search features when digging into their 2.4 million pages of Revolutionary War pension files. The new Transcription Viewer adds some very helpful tools: interactive line-by-line transcriptions, automated summaries, a scrollable “Glider” tool for tricky handwriting, a “Sidecar View” for complex documents, and the ability to create direct image overlays. It’s currently only available for use with their Rev. War Pension Files, but they’re accepting requests for other collections to consider next.

NEW GSP WEBSITE

The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania is rolling out their new website in four phases beginning October 13. Of particular interest to researchers, later phases are expected to add expanded research resources including a new Digital Library, County Pages, and Finding Aids. MEMORY STATION GOES MOBILE

TIME TO SEARCH AGAIN

New databases mean it’s time to run some new searches for those stubborn ancestors again. These are a few I came across recently, several of which I’ve been digging into myself this week:

Ancestry recently added some really great databases, including the U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Patriots List, 1775-1783, which links to each patriot’s page on the SAR website showing patriot and grave details, and even a biography. The Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, Enslaved People Name Files, 1633–1830, includes biographical information of enslaved people from original sources like Virginia county court records, Virginia Gazette notices, deeds, wills, and inventories. There’s also several interesting Canadian record sets like Canada, Mounted Police Records, 1873-1914 and Canada, Citizenship Registrations, 1857-1916 . FamilySearch added over 300 million new records in September, including some quite large collections like nearly 3 million probate records from South Africa, Cape, over 3.5 million Philippines, Deaths and Burials, 1726–1998, and in the U.S., Rhode Island vital records, with over 2 million births, marriages, and deaths from the Rhode Island State Archives with dates going up to the mid-1950s. If you have Philadelphia ancestors, the Philadelphia Congregations Early Records website (a free, work-in-progress site) has over 80,000 digitized pages from several religious congregations dating to 1708. Records include minutes, account books, and birth, marriage, death, and burial registers, with document images, transcriptions, metadata, abstracts, and source citations. https://philadelphiacongregations.org/records/

NICHE SOURCES

Beyond major commercial platforms, often genealogical records often hide on smaller websites, such as local church cemetery transcriptions or county abstracts. The “Projects and People” section (pp. 14–16) of the October NGS Magazine (a benefit of National Genealogical Society membership) highlights several of these specialized collections (like the Philadelphia religious records mentioned above) along with new research tools and more.
