Wow – can you believe it’s December already?! Time for gift giving and new-year planning! And I’ve got ideas for you for both 🙂

🔵 THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE (GIFT) BOX
If you have genealogists on your gift list or are creating your own “wish list,” consider gifting genealogy education opportunities. You could join or gift membership to a society in the area your ancestors are from, or even those that offer great member benefits, even if you don’t have any connection to the area. This could be a valuable and thoughtful gift for the family historian in your life. Genealogical society memberships generally range between $15 and $50, are often tax deductible (check with your tax person), and include many great benefits. Some of the benefits I’ve seen offered include:

  • Access to past webinar recordings, handouts, and learning libraries
  • Discounts on conferences, seminars, and purchases
  • Access to premium databases (MyHeritage library ed., Ancestry World edition, FindMyPast, Newspaper.com, etc.)
  • Free or discounted research assistance and “lookups”
  • Access to local digital genealogical content (newsletters, family files, etc.)

You can find lists of each US state’s genealogical societies on the state pages of our website (Under “Locations” tab in the menu bar). Another way to get an idea of some society benefits is to Google “genealogical society member benefits.”

And, of course, you can get a variety of unique and wonderful genealogy gifts — courses, photo scanning & organizing tools, books, clothing & accessories, research tools, programs and more — from our website sidebar advertisers and email sponsors!!

🔵 PLANNING FOR A GREAT YEAR OF GENEALOGY EDUCATION
One of the best things about the end of the year is that societies and libraries start sharing their upcoming program schedules! But this can also lead to overwhelm, when you start finding dozens of events that you don’t want to miss, but are still months away. So, I’ll share what works for me:

Now’s a good time to be sure you have a great system in place for keeping track of all the upcoming webinars and in-person programs that you have signed up for and/or want to sign up for! The easiest way that I have found is by using a Google calendar. If you already have and use a Google calendar for your day to day activities, great! If not, you might consider setting up one, even if just for genealogy events that you plan to, or are even just thinking about attending. (You will need a free Google account – i.e., email). I have adjusted my Google calendar settings to include two things that really make a big difference too — Automatic event creation and Reminders!

If you turn on Automatic event creation, when you register for an online program, when the event emails you registration details, your Google calendar will automatically take that information right from your Google email and create the calendar event for you.

How to set up Automatic event creation: Sign in to Google Calendar. Click the little gear symbol in the top bar toward the right and choose Settings. Expand ‘General’ now on the top on the left and choose “Events from Gmail” from the list below it. On the right side now, find the “Events from Gmail” section, and check the box. Events that show up in your Google email account associated with the calendar will now automatically be created on your calendar. (

Setting up automatic Notifications: I also have Notifications automatically emailed to myself both 1 day before (via email) and 30 minutes before (via an alert) an event. To set that up so it is automatic for all your Google calendar events, again go to your Settings and this time a little farther down that left list, under “Settings for my calendars”, expand the calendar you’re using and choose “Event Notifications”. Over on the right you can then add as many notifications as you’d like, choosing either by Notification or Email, and whether you want it by minutes, hours, days or even weeks from the event. You can add several automatic notifications here.

You can also change notifications on individual events too. This is super helpful for events that you find that are a couple months away but don’t yet have the sign-up open — but you don’t want to forget about it either. Go ahead and create the event on your calendar manually, and at that time enable an email notification a week or two ahead of the event date so you remember to sign up for it!

While you’re setting up Notifications, I’d also recommend just a little further down below “Event Notifications” going to the “Other Notifications” section, and set “Daily Agenda” to Email. You’ll then receive an email in the early hours of each day if you have thing on your calendar for that day.

I hope this is helpful 🙂

🔵 NEWS FROM ANIMAP
In the past couple of years, the genealogically super-helpful mapping program AniMap has undergone more than a few changes and upgrades (see the About page on their website for full details). I received an email this week with details of two big changes coming in AniMap 5, currently in development. The first is that the program will be a return to desktop (supporting Windows, Mac and Linux). The second is that AniMap is going Open Source (sponsors are being sought, so contact Andy if you are interested ). AniMap is an one of our current sidebar advertisers, but this update is just included here as interesting (and important) news for genealogists 🙂

. . . . . .

That’s all I’ve got for you this week, other than the 170+ new genealogy events. Please feel free to send me your genealogy news and be sure to submit your events — if it’s of interest to genealogists, I’d love to share! You may reach me through either the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org Have a great week!
