This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate.)
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Sept. 15 thru Oct 15 celebrates National Hispanic Heritage month, honoring the “histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.” The National Genealogical Society has put together a list or resources for Hispanic/Latino research, which is available for everyone on their blog, Upfront with NGS.
ALL ABOUT THAT PLACE 2025
At the heart of every family story is a tale about a place. It could be a county, city, town, village, or the simple hearth of a home. The study of place is a natural complement to genealogy. This year, as with last, our friends at Projectkin are joining Society of Genealogists, the Society for One-Place Studies, and the British Association for Local History (BALH) to celebrate the study of place in a mini-series, “All About That Place,” or #AATP25, from September 24 to October 3rd. Projectkin.org is contributing a “mini” program with a series of casual, live-streamed talks during the 10-day program. Each talk will highlight surprising details about artifacts, resources, and records about places around the world. Learn more at Projectkin.org/aatp25 or search for #AATP25.
JAMES WORRIS MOORE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
The National Genealogical Society has announced the inaugural participants in the recently launched James Worris Moore Leadership Academy. The Academy was created to honor the legacy of pioneering African American archivist James Worris Moore, and aims to mentor and develop future leaders in the field of genealogy, focusing on enhancing diversity, encouraging engagement, and building strong professional networks. The folks chosen for this inaugural group are Dr. kYmberly Keeton, Denise Miller, Oyuga George Nyaure, Kassidy Price, Luís Rívera, Dayna Terrell, Alexander Trapps-Chabala, and Terri Ward. You can read more about the Academy and the participants in the UpFront with NGS article here.
ROOTSMAGIC 11
The popular genealogy software RootsMagic has released version 11, with many really useful updates. Lots of the new enhancements are receiving rave reviews from some of my friends on Facebook, although I haven’t yet had time to download and try it out myself! You can download a free trial of the program, but for a limited time you can update or purchase for the first time at substantial discount, so don’t wait too long to check it out. https://www.rootsmagic.com/
NEW ADS!
Our website sidebars are FULL of new ads! Almost all are from societies around the United States, with information about upcoming special programs or events, or even just some really great resources the societies offer. Please show your support of all our supporters by clicking on and checking them out on most any page at www.ConferenceKeeper.org. Thank you!
