FREE ACCESS TO GERMAN RECORDS
MyHeritage is offering free access to all German historical records from October 2–6, 2025 in honor of Unit Day in Germany. MyHeritage hosts 283 million records across 77 German collections, including vital, church, and emigration records. Some collections from key regions like Prussia, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, and southwestern Germany are exclusive to MyHeritage. Search the collections here: https://www.myheritage.com/research/catalog?location=Germany
31 WAYS TO CELEBRATE
FamilySearch has a great article featuring 31 ways to celebrate Family History Month this month, with simple and practical suggestions relevant to both beginners or seasoned genealogists. It’s an oldie but a goodie! Check it out here: https://www.familysearch.org/en/blog/family-history-month
…AND A FEW MORE
Our friends at Artifcts also have a list of Family History Month suggestions, and some are not what you usually see, like “Start a virtual family dinner club.” Get more ideas here.
LOST FRIENDS DATABASE
This isn’t so much a new database as it is new to me. Started in 2020, the LOST FRIENDS database provides access to more than 2,500 advertisements placed in the Southwestern Christian Advocate following the Civil War, 1877 to 1929, by people from many states who were searching for loved ones lost in slavery. It is hosted on The Historic New Orleans Collection website, and is completely free to both search, browse, and view the actual advertisements.
10 MILLION MORE!
Last week I wrote about the return of Elephind, the free online resource for digitzed historic newspapers from all around the world. This past week they’ve added about 10 million more pages to their collection, including the wonderful California Digital Newspaper Collection (which previously had it’s own website but is currently shut down due to lack of funding). They’ve also added newspapers from Ohio State University; NY State, Colorado, and Wyoming Historic Newspapers; and the Virginia Chronicle. As I mentioned last week, they plan to move to a subscription model in the future, but for now it’s FREE. https://www.elephind.com/
LOUISIANA ANCESTORS?
St. Landry Parish in Opelousas, Louisiana has opened a new 9,000 sq. ft. Election and Archives Center which now houses over 300 years of historical records, including court documents, marriage licenses, and conveyance records going back to the 1700s. The Center encourages genealogical research, and suggest that if you’re planning to visit to do research, you should make an appointment with the Clerk of Court’s office first. Read more here.
FREE VIRTUAL & IN PERSON LOCK-INS
The Genealogy Network of Texas is hosting their annual all-day virtual genealogy event on October 18. It began 25 years ago as an annual lock-in for the Waco McLennan County Library Genealogy Center and the Central Texas Genealogical Society and has evolved into a full-day, webinar-based event, where libraries across Texas (and a few other states) host simultaneous events and share the presentations both to view in-person or via Zoom from home. Several locations are already on our calendar, but you can get all the details from the Waco McLennan County Library here.
