This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate.)

FREE FOR SOCIETIES

Genealogy and Family History societies, as well as Family Associations, may request a free Society Table package for RootsTech 2026. The free in-person package includes a 4-ft table, access to WiFi, 2 folding chairs, and a brochure rack in the carpeted Society Pavilion area of the Expo Hall. The package also includes online components too, even if you aren’t able to attend in person. Be sure to take this opportunity to showcase your society! (Larger booth space is also available at a fee). Details at https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/events/society-pavillion-table

FREE CONSULTATIONS

Did you know that FamilySearch offers free virtual consultations? You can request a 20 minute general genealogy consultation or a 40 minute DNA consultation. Details and to schedule a consultation, see https://www.familysearch.org/en/library/online-genealogy-help

VETERANS’ VOICES

Ancestry and the WWII Veterans History Project have teamed up for the “Thank You For Your Story” program which launched recently. The WWII Veterans History Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the memories of World War II veterans for future generations, creating documentary films, traveling museum exhibitions, and educational programs. WWII VHP started in 2015 by a young 13-year old boy, Benjamin Mack-Jackson, who is still the “Founder and Executive Director.” See the project and stories at https://www.ww2veteranshistoryproject.com/

NEW NY RECORD INDEX

The New York Genealogical & Biographical Society has made available a free-to-use enhanced index for the FamilySearch digital collection, “New York, Land Records, 1630-1975” which includes deeds, mortgages, patents and land grants. It’s an easy way to search this specific collection for the names you’re seeking. https://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/online-records/land-records

OOPS

Last week I mentioned the 100th anniversary of historic Route 66 would occur on November 11… Right date, wrong year though (The anniversary is in 2026). Many thanks to a better-informed reader who caught this! I suspect I had let my mind wander to all the family road trips taken along Rte 66 (we once even talked my parents into sleeping in a teepee at the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona). The celebration kickoff will be in Springfield, Missouri, this coming New Year’s Eve. Events are being planned in several states throughout the year. You can find out more info and see a calendar of events at https://route66centennial.org/

NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

ANOTHER NEW GENTECH TOOLBOX!: The workshop for December has just been added, and will be “Airtable Essentials for Genealogists” taught by Toolmaster Amberly Beck, AG. If you’re not familiar with Airtable, definitely check it out and consider this course. I switched from Excel to Airtable when it first came out in 2012 — personally for research logs (it’s the best!) as well as for just about everything that keeps ConferenceKeeper.org organized and operating. Like all of the GenTech Toolbox workshops, space is limited for the live event, but you may also purchase live + recording, or recording only. https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/gentechtoolbox/airtable-essentials/

The live program for Cyndi Ingle‘s upcoming November 19 workshop, “Organizing Your Data, Files, and Research Life” is now full, but recordings are still available for this and a few other past workshops including the recent workshop with Blaine Bettinger. Details for upcoming and past programs, at https://pxl.to/NGSGenTechToolbox

CONFERENCE: Save the date, 27-30 May 2026, for the 2026 NGS Family History Conference in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The conference, themed America at 250, will shine a light on the stories, communities, and research strategies that help us understand the nation’s past and focus also on how genealogists can preserve our family histories for the future. Registration should be opening soon! https://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/
