This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — just good info of interest to genealogists!)

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING LISTEN

StoryCorps’ annual “Great Thanksgiving Listen” is a wonderful opportunity to create a unique oral history of our life and times. The initiative encourages people to record interviews with relatives and loved ones, preserving their stories and memories for future generations. You can easily record your own stories or listen to stories others have submitted on the website or app. What a great activity when the relatives gather for the holidays! See the StoryCorps website for details (and it’s all free!) https://storycorps.org/discover/the-great-thanksgiving-listen/

REGISTRATION IS OPEN!

Registration for IGHR – the Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research – opened today at 12 noon Eastern. Some courses fill quickly, so be sure to register as soon as you’re able (if you haven’t already!). https://ighr.gagensociety.org/

DIGITAL ACCESS MEMBERSHIP

American Ancestors is now offering a new Digital Access Membership for only $49.95/year. The cost is less than the ‘regular’ membership, and includes digital access to their databases and records, partner databases including NewspaperArchive, 19th Century US Newspapers, The New York Times and more; standard access to their online family tree program, and quarterly digital delivery of their magazines and the Register. Details at https://hubs.americanancestors.org/explore-your-family-history-with-our-49.95-access

SMALL CHANGE, HUGE IMPACT

Ancestry.com recently updated their Terms of Service to include ”In exchange for access to the Services, you agree… Not to use the Services in connection with any law enforcement investigation or judicial proceeding.” While this might not affect many of their users, it hits hard for many genealogists working in the fields of Investigative Genetic Genealogy, Forensic and Legal Genealogy. Not only does this affect Ancestry subscribers who (whether as a volunteer or paid) assist with cold cases, identifying human remains, solving violent crimes or even wrongful convictions, by including ‘judicial proceeding’ it also flags those who work on heir search, probate, mineral & property rights and even paternity cases. While Ancestry is a private company and have the right to restrict use of their site, many argue that the datasets are all public record and should not be only available for specific uses. The new ToS is definitely something to be aware of if you use the website for anything other than personal family research.

NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

NEW CO-EDITOR: Diane MacLean Boumenot, CG®, is the new co-editor of National Genealogical Society Quarterly (NGSQ), succeeding Margaret R. Fortier, CG, who has served as co-editor for the past three years. Diane will begin working alongside co-editor Mary Kircher Roddy, CG, on the NGSQ in January 2026.

GENTECH TOOLBOX!: The workshop for December will be “Airtable Essentials for Genealogists” with Toolmaster Amberly Beck, AG. Like all of the GenTech Toolbox workshops, space is limited for the live event, but you may also purchase live + recording, or recording only. https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/gentechtoolbox/airtable-essentials/

Recordings are still available for the November workshop with Cyndi Ingle, “Organizing Your Data, Files, and Research Life” and other past workshops. Details for upcoming and past programs, at https://pxl.to/NGSGenTechToolbox

CONFERENCE: Save the date, 27-30 May 2026, for the 2026 NGS Family History Conference in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The conference, themed America at 250, will shine a light on the stories, communities, and research strategies that help us understand the nation’s past and focus also on how genealogists can preserve our family histories for the future. Registration should be opening soon! https://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/
