This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)

FAREWELL, HISTORY HUB

The (US) National Archives’ History Hub closed for new questions & comments Thursday (January 15), and will remain available for reference only until February 13 of this year. (And I suspect the archived website will be on the Wayback Machine as well.) History Hub has been a valuable Q&A public forum where genealogists could get help with their research questions from archivists and other experts. It was particularly useful for getting help in locating specific records and for getting guidance on complex historical questions. On a positive note, though, the site states that this will “allow National Archives staff to prioritize direct communication with researchers and respond to inquiries through inquire@nara.gov.”

ST. LOUIS ANCESTORS?

If you have ancestors that lived in St. Louis, Missouri, you might be interested in a series of free webinars St. Louis County Library will be hosting this month and next, on various historical events and aspects of St. Louis history and events, such as the New Madrid Earthquakes; the Civil War in St. Louis; the Great Fire of 1849; Unique Gravestones in Black Cemeteries; and more. Their “Challenging History” series programs will also be posted on their YouTube channel after the events. The programs are on our calendar, and you can find out more about the series at https://slcl.events.mylibrary.digital/series?sn=Challenging+History

FAMILYSEARCH’S 2026 PLANS

FamilySearch shared several “coming attractions” on their 2026 to-do list this week. Along with the addition of still more family history records from all over the world, they plan to expand their Full-Text Search to include reading old handwriting in more languages, making them more easily searchable for ancestors’ names. They’re also planning new features for the Family Tree, new projects in Labs, and more. You can read all the details here: https://www.familysearch.org/en/blog/what-to-expect-from-familysearch-in-2026

IT’S ABOUT TIME!

The calendar is almost completely updated, with events appearing by their starting time in each viewer’s own time zone! Making the switch for all future new events only involved writing some new formulas, but the time-consuming part has been updating every. single. event. already on the calendar. That’s about 1,500 events (not counting placeholder/recurring events). Whew! A few images fell off, but I’m working on getting them added back; I appreciate your patience 🙂

Now, if you’re looking at the “Calendar View” (of the three choices on the very top right), events should appear in order by start time, with all-day or multi-day events still appearing at the top. Where you will now also see the times is on the “Agenda” and “Pinboard” views, with the event date & time appearing either just above or below the event title. The times show on all events when you click to read the descriptions as well. (As always, please verify dates and times with the host when registering).

Also, new event descriptions will no longer include that long list showing all the the time zones as before, since the start time now shows in YOUR time zone already. (I haven’t stripped them out of all the existing events though). Please let me know if you have any thoughts pro or con on these changes! As always, you can email me at info@conferencekeeper.org, or use the CONTACT form found in the website’s menu bar.
