This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
FREE ACCESS
In honor of Australia Day, MyHeritage is offering free access to 2.2 billion Australian historical records Jan. 22-27. The free access includes 308 Australian collections of births, marriages, deaths, immigration, military service, convict records, and more. Read more on their blog, or head straight to searching the Australian records.
GLOBAL GATHERING
The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) is holding their APG 2026 Global Gathering this week on Thursday, Jan. 29. Genealogists from around the world, both APG members AND non-members, are invited to attend this free virtual program. Discussion spaces will include topics like American Revolutionary War Research; Jewish Research; British Research; African American Research; Mexican Research; Patchwork/Unknown Parentage; Italian Research; and Continuing Education. Thinking about going pro, or would just like to elevate your skills? Attend and learn more about what APG offers. https://members.apgen.org/Calendar/moreinfo.php?eventid=191192
DOGGIE DNA
Ancestry is discontinuing its Know Your Pet DNA service to refocus on family history and genetic genealogy. Pet DNA kit sales ended Dec. 31, 2025, with final results being processed until March 31, 2026. Know Your Pet DNA customers have been emailed instructions on how to set up a new account with BioPet Laboratories (who has taken over the pet DNA from Ancestry) as well as how to download your current results from Ancestry which must be done by May 1.
BUILDING BRIDGES
Projectkin, the free online community focused on transforming family history research into stories, is making a shift to include “Skybridges” to help connect genealogy creators. While Projectkin resides primarily on Substack, they acknowledge that many bloggers and vloggers want to reach bigger audiences without leaving their home platforms like WordPress or YouTube. Projectkin’s “Skybridges” will link these communities together. This helps individual storytellers find new audiences and creates a stronger, more connected online genealogy community for everyone. A first example of this will be the RootsTech Ride Along announced for 2026. Learn more at https://Projectkin.org/skybridges.
News from the National Genealogical Society
CHANGES TO FORUM: The National Genealogical Society (NGS) has announced its online community, FORUM, will close on January 31. A new, more user-friendly platform is planned to launch in February, making it easier for genealogy enthusiasts to connect from any device. NGS encourages everyone to save any information they need from FORUM before it closes at the end of the month.
NEW NGSQ: The December 2025 issue of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly is available for NGS members at https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/ngsq/. The “Q” is just another excellent benefit of membership in the National Genealogical Society!
HONORARY CHAIRMAN: NGS welcomes Major General (Retired) Garrett S. Yee as the Honorary Chairman of its campaign to preserve and digitize NARA’s early U.S. military bounty land warrant application files from veterans of early American wars, which will make over 360,000 records from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and other conflicts, freely available online. This digitization project means LOTS of new information for genealogists to help uncover the stories of early American veterans and their families. For more information about the Veteran Bounty Land Records Project, see ngsgenealogy.org/veteran-bounty-land-records-project/
