MY IDEA OF A HOLIDAY

I’m looking forward to spending Sunday, Mother’s Day, taking advantage of Newspapers.com’s free access weekend (through today, Sunday). I’m at a point in researching one family where I’m hoping to find newspaper tidbits that mention their goings on, since they don’t seem have created many other records.  Access the free weekend at   http://nwspprs.com/moms2023

CAUGHT MY EYE:

There are SOO many great online programs/webinars coming this week alone, that can be really helpful for your genealogy education. Here are three that caught my eye: The first is Monday, May 15 at 5 pm Central Time – “Finding Aid Basics: A Beginners Guide to Finding Aids” from Backlog. “Get a solid understanding of what Finding Aids are, why they’re important, and how they’re used.” Basically, if you ever want to search through archives and special collections, you’ll almost always need to use the repository’s Finding Aids.  Register at https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIlceGtqDwrH9Blcza8D9_tZzEjHIztUH3H#/registration

Another ‘not-to-miss’ webinar is on May 17 at 1 pm Eastern, and is part of the free 2023 National Archives Genealogy Series on Public Service: Military & Civilian, from the (US) National Archives, St. Louis: Understanding the 1973 Fire and Its Impact on Genealogical Research – learn additional ways to find information about veterans whose records were damaged or lost. Pre-registration is not required. https://www.archives.gov/calendar/genealogy-series/2023

While the title of this webinar didn’t catch my attention, the description did – I’m always looking for ways to understand my ancestors’ lives! This week, May 24, NYG&B (New York Genealogical and Biographical Society) has a free webinar called “Buried Beneath the City: An Archaeological History of New York,” discussing a book of the same name about “…how the City’s history and the stories of its diverse residents can be told through the artifacts they left behind. They will demonstrate how the archaeological record can be used to fill in the gaps where written records do not exist or have not survived. These artifacts, often mundane items, can help detail the lives of our ancestors, especially those who are absent from the documentary record.” An added bonus: all who attend in-person receive a free copy of the book. https://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/events/buried-beneath-city-archaeological-history-new-york

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the Texas State Historical Association has an online used book auction on ebay? They’ve got quite a variety of titles, covering historic to modern, some are even collector editions. Even if you’re not interested in owning more books (I know, that’s just crazy talk), you might find a title you haven’t heard of that may help with your research… then look it up on WorldCat to find a library near you that has a copy (or maybe even where to find it online!). https://www.ebay.com/str/tshatexanaauction

DIGITAL STORYTELLING

You might know that the online digital storytelling platform Ponga.com has closed their doors. For those who really like the idea of sharing their photos, stories, and memories digitally, a new “Post-Ponga” community has begun, open to any and all who are looking for ways to make something out of those piles of photos and combine them with the memories they represent. The group is looking at different ways to use existing (and mostly free) software to accomplish this, and has shared a couple of webinars on ConferenceKeeper, inviting all to check out the new group.  You can also see what’s going on at the new website, https://postponga.com

The list of this week’s newly added events is below. Thank you for your emails with comments, suggestions and corrections! I am always looking at ways to improve the website, and your suggestions really help me know what to work on next. Don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at  info@conferencekeeper.org if you’d like to reach me.  Have a great week!
