ROOTSTECH REGISTRATION OPENS
Registration for RootsTech 2026 opened this week, for both the in-person and virtual events. The in-person event will be held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, March 5-7, and is currently at the early bird price of $99 for three days, or $69 for one day. Registering for the online event is encouraged, and provides access to live-streamed and on-demand sessions for the 2026 conference. Hopefully you’re already familiar with the RootsTech conference, which still has probably 1,000 videos available at RootsTech.org from past years. Register for 2026 at RootsTech.org (then watch a few more videos! )
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15 through October 15 every year, and the National Genealogical Society (NGS) has put together a list of resources for Hispanic family history research. You can find this on the UpFront with NGS blog, here.
OCTOBER IS FAMILY HISTORY MONTH
Family History month starts Wednesday, Oct. 1, and you’ll notice quite the uptick in genealogy events of all kinds on our calendars! (See our sidebar ads for several ‘biggies’ this month too!). NGS has also created a list of resources for folks to use and/or share with others, covering the bases of Scan, Record, Write, and Join. Check it out here.
ELEPHIND RETURNS
Elephind, the free historical newspaper search engine, is back following a 2-year absence while they updated and upgraded the website. You can now easily search nearly 14 million pages of historic newspapers from around the world. Try out the new, very handy, “AI Summary” button in the lower right of the search results page to quickly summarize the articles in your search results. While the site was taken offline in 2023 due to the ‘unsustainable costs of hosting and maintaining’ , it is currently still free to use, but that may change. The “About” page states that they plan to soon move to a subscription model, so you might want to try it out sooner rather than later. https://www.elephind.com/
FREE DNA KITS THRU ILLINOIS PROGRAM
The Illinois Family Roots Pilot Program, a state-funded initiative launched in June 2025, is offering free DNA testing kits to Illinois residents to help explore their African ancestry. The program is administered through the TAKiR (The African Kinship Reunion) genetic genealogy project who aims to distribute up to 1,600 kits statewide by early 2026. Illinois residents can request a free kit through the TAKiR website. You will probably be able to learn more about the project at the upcoming Fountaindale Library October 8 Genealogy Club program with LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, “Using DNA to Identify Enslaved Ancestors“
NEW YORK LAND RECORDS INDEX
The New York Genealogical & Biographical Society (NYG&B) has created and made available a free-to-use index for FamilySearch’s digital collection of New York, Land Records, 1630–1975, with 63.5 million records from over 32 million deed, mortgage, patent and land grant transactions. The searchable index also includes links (when available) directly to the images on FamilySearch. Hosted on the NYG&B’s website, the database is fully accessible to the public for searching—no membership or account required. Got NY ancestors? Search the index here.
UPDATES TO THE GREAT MIGRATION DIRECTORY
The Great Migration Directory, originally published by American Ancestors in 2015, is a survey of all known people who immigrated to New England between 1620 and 1640 — over 5,700 individuals! It includes data of their origins, migration dates, residences and sources. A new 2nd Edition has just been released, and adds 82 new immigrants, expands the existing sketches with new research, has corrected some errors in the first edition, and more. It’s available from American Ancestors, here.
ANCESTRY LAWSUIT…
Ancestry.com has taken legal action gain to access to millions of Scottish family records going back to the 12th century that are currently held by the National Records of Scotland (NRS). The NRS said they would lose approximately £3.7 million a year if they grant Ancestry access, as their records are usually available for a small public fee. Although Ancestry’s appeal this week was partially successful, a final decision on the release of these valuable historical records is still pending further legal proceedings. This article from Who Do You Think You Are includes the list of digital images and indices that Ancestry is seeking to obtain.
…AND SALE?
Ancestry‘s parent company, Blackstone, is currently considering options for Ancestry.com, including both making the company public thru an Initial Public Offering (IPO) as well as the possibility of selling it altogether. Blackstone purchased Ancestry.com in 2020 for $4.7 billion, and this article suggests a public listing could value it now at about $10 billion. No decisions have been made, but I thought it at least newsworthy that these options are being considered.
EVENTS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
NEW ‘Q’ : The latest issue of the NGSQ (National Genealogical Society Quarterly) has been posted online for members to access. The “Q,” (a member benefit) is highly respected for its scholarly, peer-reviewed articles and rigorous standards in genealogical research. It consistently features thoroughly researched case studies based on analytical thinking and practical problem-solving, making it an invaluable resource for both professional and serious amateur genealogists. Non-members may access sample articles from the website as well. https://pxl.to/NGSQ
VISIT WITH US!: We’ll be in the exhibit halls at both the upcoming AAAHGS Conference 9-11 October in Charleston, SC; and also at NERGC 29 October- 1 November 2025 in Manchester, NH. Stop by, say “hi” and learn about all the benefits resources the National Genealogical Society offers!
AWARD NOMINATIONS: Genealogists, family historians, societies, libraries, and others in our community: Please submit deserving people, organizations, books, and newsletters for NGS Awards and Competitions. The deadline is 15 December 2025, but don’t wait – now is a great time to get them in before you get busy with fall activities and into holidays. Review all categories and nomination info at https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/awards-competitions.
CULTURE CONVERSATION: The Culture Conversation with Michael O’Malley, previously scheduled for October 8, has been rescheduled for 22 October, 2025, at 8 pm Eastern. Michael O’Malley is a Professor in the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University, and is the author of The Color of Family: History, Race, and the Politics of Ancestry. O’Malley will be joined by Andre Kearns, a member of the NGS Board of Directors, who is mentioned in the book. Find more information and the link to register, here.

Details for upcoming and past programs, including last week’s workshop with Steven Little, “Power Prompts: Strong Prompts Matched to the Right Model for Genealogical Tasks“, at https://pxl.to/NGSGenTechToolbox

I am definitely celebrating Family History Month in October this year, starting with a trip to northeast Ohio to inter dad’s ashes in the headstone with mom at a cemetery where soooo many of my ancestors rest, as far back as the early 1800s. I’m also planning a couple solid days to research in a library’s collection that is not digitized and not available anywhere else — and best of all, the kind librarian there has indicated that this collection may hold the answers to my years-long brick wall (She actually said there was so much available on the names I sent that she didn’t have the available time to go through and copy it all! Am I excited? You bet! I’ll mention this again next week, but the October 11 newsletter may be a bit lighter than usual, as that’s the end of the week that I’ll be traveling and researching. I don’t write these newsletters weeks in advance (it’s my Friday night genealogy fun, lol), and I can’t remember the last time I missed sending one.
As always, I sincerely appreciate your emails, whether corrections or additions to the calendar, or, of course, letting me know you’re finding the calendar or newsletter useful! Please send your questions, corrections, comments, or concerns to me through either the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org. Thank you!
