SOCIETY OF GENEALOGISTS SPECIAL EVENTS
The Society of Genealogists has added dozens of upcoming lectures, workshops, and more to our calendars this week. Included are three noteworthy programs/events. The first is their DNA Summer School, a 5-day program via Zoom taught by Michelle Leonard, Mia Bennett, Debbie Kennett and Sophie Kay, with Guest instructors Else Churchill, Donna Rutherford, and Paul McNeil. The second is the week-long Researching 17th Century Ancestors summer school, with Else Churchill and guest speaker Dr. Jonathan Healey. And the third notable event is “NextGENeration – Discoveries,” a full day of talks by the NextGeneration of GENealogists. Discover new speakers with unique talks and learn from the NextGENeration of genealogists! This event is on the “Pay What You Can” model.
SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE
The folks at All About That Place 2024 are still accepting proposals for 30 minute talks, until June 30, for the #AATP2024 event which will happen Sept 27 to Oct 6th this year. The event is completely free and full of short talks filled with ideas and inspiration for finding your ancestors. What might you be able to share? If you haven’t yet submitted ideas how about thinking about the innovations ancestors may have seen in their lifetime? How did photography, steam power, the combustion engine or the telegram change peoples lives? What are your favorite tools to put ancestors in their place? Is there a website or an app you’ve discovered and could share with the world? Have you found an innovative way to use spreadsheets to sort your data? Learn more about the event here. WANT ACCESS TO NEW NARA DATABASES?
Have you ever searched an online database, like FamilySearch or FindAGrave, for “your” ancestor? Many of the resources that we rely on daily have been created by volunteers! While there is a whole page of Volunteer opportunities here on ConferenceKeeper.org, I’m highlighting one today from the (US) National Archives, to help be a Citizen Archivist. You can contribute a tag, comment, or transcription to any records in their Catalog, but this month, in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, they’re asking for help with the Chinese Heritage Outside the Box mission. If you have ancestors who immigrated from China from 1882 to 1943, you might just find your own ancestors in this collection! If not, you can still help out with this mission — or find another from dozens of other volunteer projects for document sets of all kinds! These are records that haven’t yet been made available, so you might find something you haven’t found before! The Citizen Archivist program has complete instructions on how to help, and even chat groups for support. If you have even just a couple minutes, you can ‘pay it forward’!
