This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate.)

This week’s news is brief, but both very important to the future of genealogy research:

YOUR VOICE IS NEEDED

RPAC – the Records Preservation & Access Coalition – has shared frightening news that the current US administration “has issued an executive order targeting the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The order directs the IMLS acting director to take immediate steps to eliminate the agency to the maximum extent allowable by law by determining its statutory requirements, laying off staff, and cutting programs deemed unnecessary by the presidential administration.

“The IMLS provides essential funding to libraries and museums in all 50 states and U.S. territories. The agency is crucial in providing all Americans with access to records, especially in rural areas. The American Library Association (ALA) and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) are leading efforts to counter the Trump administration’s attack on the IMLS, and we urge you to support the IMLS through one or both of their campaigns. Here are the Links for further information and what YOU can do:
The American Library Association (ALA): https://www.ala.org/advocacy/show-up-for-our-libraries
the American Alliance of Museums (AAM): https://www.aam-us.org/2025/03/17/urgent-act-now-to-save-imls/

AND STILL ANOTHER CALL TO ACTION

The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) has alerted their members and the public to upcoming legislation in the state of Indiana that would change the restriction on birth certificate access from 75 years to 99 years. It has passed in the House and is headed now to the state Senate. If you’d like to add your voice, they’ve outlined steps that you can take here: https://www.apgen.org/news_manager.php?page=39804

IF YOU’RE IN THE DC AREA APRIL 9…

The Records Preservation and Access Coalition (RPAC) is hosting its second Family History Hill Day in Washington, D.C., on April 9, 2025. This special event invites RPAC advocates and the genealogy community to meet with Members of Congress and their staff. The focus for 2025 is to secure funding for the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Supporting NARA is crucial for preserving and accessing genealogical records, and your participation can make a significant impact. Find out more about Family History Hill Day here:  https://www.recordsadvocate.org/come-to-dc-register-for-family-history-hill-day-on-9-april-2025/

NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

This year’s NGS Family History Conference “Tales & Trails” in Louisville, Kentucky, May 23-26, will be a weekend of excellent genealogy education and some really great workshop and tours too! The long weekend will end with a special Memorial Day event at Louisville’s historic, 296-acre Cave Hill Cemetery. The venue is Galt House Hotel, which will house accommodations, sessions, the Expo Hall and more all in the same location! You can find all of the conference details and information at https://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/

Societies, libraries, archives, museums, and institutions in the genealogy and family history community are invited to submit short videos highlighting great projects or programs that might inspire others to create similar initiatives. NGS will accept SLAM! Idea Showcase entries until Friday, March 28, 2025. Winners get up to $250 and recognition at the NGS Family History Conference! Get details and criteria at https://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/slam-idea-showcase.

The Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP) still has a few spaces available in both the virtual (22-27 June)  and in-person (13-18 July) sessions. These programs offer week-long, focused, in-depth education on the topic of your choice — and there’s quite a variety offered, with several new courses added this year. Check out the courses and get registered soon! https://grip.ngsgenealogy.org
