This week’s email is kindly being sponsored by Digging History

Digging History is a business focused on history and genealogy.  Helping clients discover their ancestral roots thrills me to no end, and I’ve made some amazing discoveries for my clients.  I especially enjoy documenting their family history with beautiful custom-designed charts.

Please go to the page I’ve created exclusively for Conference Keeper email subscribers to check out all the deals I’m offering until November 30, 2023 (coupons, giveaways and a free custom-designed family history chart).

This time of year is always so exciting! Societies and libraries are planning their next year’s programs and adding them to the calendar! Be sure you have your digital or paper calendar handy as you go thru the list of newly added events — all 230 of them!!

🔵 GENEALOGY SPEAKERS!
Wow – SIX new Calls for Presentations posted this week! See the Calls for Papers/Presentations page for details (ALSO LISTED BELOW!

I’ve been very happy to see several updates as well as new entries being submitted for the online Speaker’s list! Be sure to share it with your society program chair, as well as any genealogy speaker’s you know!

🔵 FOLD3 AND FINDMYPAST ARE FREE FOR VETERANS DAY
Both Fold 3 and Findmypast are making their websites and collections completely free for a few days in honor of Veterans Day. Fold 3 access runs through Nov. 12 (Sunday) and FindMyPast is available through Monday Nov. 13. You’ll need to sign up for a free account if you don’t already have one — I don’t believe you need to “sign up for a free trial” – just create a user account.

🔵 NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH
November is Native American History month, and you can easily find all of the programs and webinars on Native American research that are on the ConferenceKeeper.org calendars by searching in the top left green search box of any calendar with the words: Native American. The National Genealogical Society recently emailed members a helpful list of resources including the following:

🔵 SHARE YOUR STORIES CHALLENGE
RootsTech’s theme this year is “Remember“, and they have kicked off a “Share Your Stories” social media challenge, asking anyone and everyone to share their stories of what family (past, present or future) means to you, add a hashtag #reemember, tag @RootsTech, and if possible use the theme song (available on Instagram) “Out of Time” by Ellie Barry. See the full details at https://klear.com/recruit-form/rootstech

🔵 MAKING VOLUNTEERING EVEN EASIER
BillionGraves has updated their headstone transcription form, making it even easier to spend a few minutes here and there helping to add the information from photos that others have uploaded to their vast database. One of the reasons that I like the BillionGraves site and data is that their instructions to volunteers include “Only transcribe information written on the stone unless you have sources.” This keeps the headstone data accurate, avoiding the “helpful” addition of additional but inaccurate information by overly zealous volunteers. Plus, it’s fun and easy to help add photos to their cemetery databases — you can literally just walk along a row and snap pictures with your smartphone, and they’ll automatically upload and include the GPS data right from the Billion Graves phone App. You don’t have to create a whole memorial and you don’t have to even transcribe them yourself.

🔵 GENEALOGY CONFERENCES & SEMINAR EVENTS COMING SOON:

See the CONFERENCES tab on the website for all upcoming conferences. You can also search “Seminar” to find seminars specifically.

. . . . . .

Is there other news or information you’d like to see in this newsletter/blog? Should this just be posted on the blog with an email reminder linking to it? I’m always looking to improve things to be as helpful and efficient as possible!! And as always, let me know what works and what doesn’t on the website, too! What do you like? what do you wish was there or worked better?? You may reach me through either the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org Have a great week!
