BOOK GIVEAWAY

AncestralFindings is giving away a copy of Darcie Hind Posz’s “Ancestoring: Understanding Records, Family, and Ourselves.” This is a wonderful book for genealogists, whether you win (enter by Sept. 1) or purchase a copy. It’s not just another “how to” book, but instead encourages researchers to look beyond basic records and analyze historical evidence, context, and personal biases to better understand their ancestors. It may have you looking at your research in a whole new way! See our Contests page for the entry link.

SUMMIT OF EXCELLENCE

The Utah Genealogical Association’s Summit of Excellence 2026 kicks off on Thursday, September 10th, with a FREE Getting Started Day that’s open to everyone. The day features live virtual presentations taught by experts, covering beginner strategies, source evaluation, digital file organization, DNA match analysis, and military historical context. While registration fees apply for the remainder of the multi-day conference, Thursday’s sessions are completely free, but you do need to register for them. The full conference will run until September 10-12 and recordings for all three days will be available until December 31, 2026. https://academy.ugagenealogy.org/courses/summit-of-excellence-2026/

ALL ABOUT THAT PLACE

Following the success of last year’s event, the Society of Genealogists is once again hosting All About That Place October 7 to 16, 2026. This FREE 10-day virtual event features quick 10-minute talks on local history, historical maps, and community research. This year, All About That Place will happen across a new Learning Hub and brand-new community, with videos available to watch and lots more happening throughout the event. The best way to follow the event and be first to get updates is to subscribe to the Society of Genealogists’ emails at https://www.sog.org.uk/subscribe

BRILLIANT UPDATE!

Legacy Family Tree Webinars has made an incredibly helpful update to their website by introducing “Learning Paths.” Learning Paths are guided topic-specific mini-courses organized into a step-by-step educational journey in 3-6 webinars, covering currently over 100 different areas (pathways) of research. LFTW subscribers can also easily create their own “paths” from LFTW’s 2,798 recorded webinars. If you ask me, this is an absolutely brilliant addition to an already great website! More about Learning Paths at https://familytreewebinars.com/learning-paths

NEW CIVIL WAR DATABASE

Fold3 has added a new record collection titled Atlanta, Georgia, Confederate States of America Quartermaster Department, 1861-1864, which includes administrative ledgers logging supply, clothing, and equipment issued in the South during the Civil War. These records often include details not found on standard muster rolls, showing location changes, supply distribution, and everyday survival conditions. You can search the database of over 8,000 records for free, but to view you’ll need either a subscription or a visit to a local FamilySearch center or affiliate library. Easily find one near you: https://locations.familysearch.org/en/search

SWEDISH-AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS DIGITIZED

The Swenson Swedish American Research Center announced their new Swedish American Newspapers Project which now provides free online access to 348 Swedish-American newspapers, with more than 1.3 million searchable pages. These papers can help researchers find names, places, events, churches, groups, and everyday news from Swedish communities across North America. The complete collection can be accessed for free through the Minnesota Historical Society’s Swedish American Newspapers website.

IS THERE A CHAVIS IN YOUR TREE?

If you have the surname Chavis in your family tree, you may apply for free DNA testing at Family Tree DNA for the CHAVIS surname group project. Contact Sabine Preston at Tamesabine@gmail.com with subject Chavis testing and send family history or tree. Details of this and two other DNA projects offering free testing can be found on our Awards, Grants & Scholarships page.
