This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate.)
MAY IS AAPI HERITAGE MONTH
May is designated Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month to honor the rich histories and contributions of Asian Americans in the United States. If you’re researching in these areas, you’ll want to read the new post on the NGS UpFront blog which includes links to several excellent research resources. UpFront is free and available for all to access at https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/
FREE ISSUE
Family Tree magazine is offering a free digital issue of their May publication, which is a special edition marking the 80th anniversary of VE day. Grab your copy soon, as the link will only be good until May 9. (After clicking the link, the magazine will open. Use the arrow buttons at the very bottom of the screen to change pages).
SALE EXTENDED
Legacy Family Tree Webinars has extended their 15th anniversary sale through Wednesday May 7, offering new memberships for 50% off – only $25. This is easily one of the best investments in your genealogy education, with 24/7 access to over 2,400 webinars, plus syllabus materials and special members-only series. Get your discounted membership here.
ARCHIVES BEING DIGITIZED
Ancestry.com is partnering with Getty Images to digitize historical documents, records and the photographic archives of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), which will then become searchable on Ancestry websites. This is part of the HBCU Grant Program at Getty Images. It’s quite a win-win, with participating HBCUs retaining full copyright ownership to their assets and data; receiving the digitized files as well as complimentary campus-wide access to Ancestry’s platform. You can see over 10,000 images already on Getty Images’ website by clicking HERE. Institutions interested in participating can find information at https://www.gettyimages.com/corporate-responsibility/hbcu-partnership
POSSIBLE LOSS OF A RESOURCE
The California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC) contains nearly 1.5 million issues comprising 21,585,951 pages from California newspapers as early as 1845. Their funding for the current fiscal year has been unexpectedly withheld, and without it, the CDNC states the site may have to shut down as soon as the end of June. An article in J Weekly details their plight. If you’re researching California ancestors, you might want to utilize the site soon, and perhaps share your thoughts with California legislators. Search the California Digital Newspaper Collection at https://cdnc.ucr.edu/

I’m out of town yet again, this time in Dallas, Texas, visiting family, but of course I have my computer with me. I appreciate your patience if I may be a bit slower to respond to emails. Next week’s newsletter may be a little late as I’m travelling all day Friday and attending a daughter’s wedding on Saturday — the days I usually write & send the newsletter. As always, feel free to send questions, corrections, comments, or concerns to me through either the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org. Your input is very much appreciated!!
