GET A GROUP

I received a notice about registration opening soon for the GenProof study group so thought this would be a great time to talk about Genealogy Study Groups! Webinars, classes, meetings, and institutes are great for learning new skills and methodologies to help you find your ancestors, but getting together with other like-minded researchers to talk and share ideas adds a whole other dimension! Participating in a genealogy study group is a wonderful way to not only reinforce and better understand what you may have already learned, but also to go deeper into concepts and improve your genealogical research skills. There are lots of study groups out there, too! Some may be informal, focusing on general research practices, while others may be more formal, structured around specific books, articles, or methodologies. Some are free to participate in, and others have a fee, but ALL are worthwhile endeavors to learn and grow as a genealogist! Below are a couple of options to consider, but don’t forget to check with your local society or library, or search for others that might be scheduled on ConferenceKeeper’s calendars!

GENPROOF STUDY GROUP – This program offers a guided exploration of Mastering Genealogical Proof, by Thomas W. Jones, under the leadership of a skilled volunteer mentor, providing live discussions in Zoom, online discussions in Basecamp, and independent reading and written assignments, supported by the book’s content and additional proprietary materials. **Registration for fall and winter sessions starts August 1. https://genproofstudygroups.com/

PROGEN STUDY GROUP – ProGen Study Groups are peer-based educational programs for aspiring genealogists, focusing on the book “Professional Genealogy: A Manual for Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers, and Librarians.” ProGen groups operate on a volunteer basis, with group members completing chapter assignments and participating in live video discussions to provide peer feedback. The program is designed to be highly accessible and affordable, covering only administrative costs, and emphasizes networking and relationship-building among its members. New groups usually are formed in late fall and begin the following year. Apply to register your interest and be notified of the next offering. https://progenstudygroups.com/

NGSQ STUDY GROUPS – These are monthly study groups with the goal of examining one article from the National Genealogical Society Quarterly (NGSQ) each month. Groups are usually more informal and almost always free, but still foster genealogical research skill development, and enhance understanding of genealogical standards and methodologies. A few are listed on The NGSQ Study Group website meet in a variety of formats, from a set monthly virtual meeting, to one that meets throughout the month via a Google Group, and even one that meets monthly in the virtual world SecondLife. Check with your local or state-level genealogical society. One such program that I’m aware of is the Texas State Genealogical Society which has helped organize several Stirpes study groups where participants at societies and libraries dive deeper into methodology and research techniques based on articles in their quarterly journal Stirpes. Diana Elder and Nicole Dyer run a Research Like a Pro Study Group annually, which meets weekly for 12 weeks. Registration for the Fall 2025 group ends August 21. Group members complete assignments and then give and receive feedback to one another. SEARCHED ONCE? SEARCH AGAIN!

This is true for any and every genealogy database website, really, since they all are continually adding hundreds to millions of records daily, weekly, monthly… What wasn’t there yesterday may be there today! My success this week was in the FamilySearch Labs Full-Text Search — I thought I’d gotten all I could from this site a short while ago, and last weekend ran a few random searches, which to my surprise, resulted in finding the probate papers and will of my heretofore-unknown fifth great-grandfather! My fourth great grandparents divorced rather publicly in 1812, a fact I’d discovered a while back using old newspapers. (The newspaper’s divorce announcement included some rather surprising details — providing several dates and the name of the gentleman with whom my 4ggmother had been unfaithful.) After that, she disappeared and I’d almost given up on ever finding her again. Until last weekend! Searching her name in the Full-Text search in Labs, I came across a will that named her as one of 8 children the deceased’s estate would be divided among, and where she was currently living. And I know it was her, because it states not only her name, but that she was formerly married to __, naming her ex-husband, my 4ggrandfather. So! Got a minute? Go run searches on your ‘brickwalls’ one more time. NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

GENTECH TOOLBOX: The NGS GenTech Toolbox workshops offer in-depth instruction on practical digital skills that can enhance your family history research. These workshops are available to purchase whether you’re an NGS member or not (although members receive a discount). There are also three options on how to attend: 1. register for the live virtual program and have access to the recording later; 2. register for just the live program; or 3. register just the recording (On-Demand).

Two live virtual workshops are currently scheduled: “Excel for Genealogists” with Toolmaster Mark Thompson, on July 24 at 1 pm Eastern; and “Power Prompts: Strong Prompts Matched to the Right Model for Genealogical Tasks” with Toolmaster Steve Little, on September 25 at 2 pm Eastern (both are on the ConferenceKeeper calendar). Recordings for three of the previous workshops are also still available: “Hands-On AI for Family History Writing: Prompts and Practice,” with Kimberly T.
