This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate.)

INTERNET ARCHIVE NOW A FEDERAL DEPOSITORY LIBRARY

The Internet Archive has officially been granted federal depository status by the US Senate, which means the site will now gain improved access to, and be able to share, government publications and documents. This is really good news for genealogists, as it will make it easier to access government records like census data, historical reports, and other official documents. You can read the announcement from Internet Archive on their blog, here. You can read a more detailed explanation of the Federal Depository Library Program on the US Government Publishing Office website here.

NEW ACCESS TO COURT CASES

The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) announced the release of hundreds of historic volumes of U.S. Supreme Court cases dating from 1790–1991. The documents are now available on the GovInfo.gov website, where you can find published information for all three branches of the U.S. Federal Government. You can find out what all documents are available and suggestions on how to best search the collection here.

STORYTELLING USING OLD TECH AND NEW

Ancestry has acquired iMemories, a home-movie and photo digitizing service, with the goal of combining all of your family history research, trees, and DNA insights, with digitized audio and visual memories from photos, old VHS tapes, DVDs, etc. As genealogists, we often stress the importance of thinking of our ancestors as more than just the names and dates on the documents, and this will definitely help bring those old records and papers to life. Ancestry is also planning to use AI to create visuals, like small family films, from all the input, which should help capture the attention of younger generations and hopefully encourage them to learn more about their family history. More details about both companies and the acquisition can be found in this article by Fast Company, here.

STORIES FROM US WWI DRAFT REGISTRATIONS

Storied has added a neat feature with their database of U.S. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918, which was free to use this past week with a free account. After a quick search and locating a card of interest, when you pull up the actual image, “Create a story” appears in the details panel to the right. When clicked, a story is created using artificial intelligence (AI) from the information written on the draft card. The AI not only pulls all the basic data (names, dates, places), but also enhances the details with historical information from the location and era. Realizing AI isn’t perfect, the story is easily editable (as well as shareable). When I experimented with it, I was surprised at how well it transcribed most of the poor handwriting, and how it added some interesting local history based on the occupation and location. I appreciate having a starting point or outline suggested by AI when writing, but always recommend rewriting in your own words and style. Still, this is definitely an easy way to start an ancestor’s military service profile. You’ll find it here: https://storied.com/historical-record-search/world-war-I-draft-registration-cards
