NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

November is National American Indian Heritage Month, so you might possibly see more programs tagged “Native American” or “Indigenous” on the calendar! The latest NGS UpFront blog post includes some great research tips and links for researching this ancestry – https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/2024/11/native-american-heritage-month.html

FREE ACCESS THIS WEEKEND

MyHeritage is offering free access to over 1.5 billion death, burial, cemetery, and obituary records from October 30 through November 2, 2025. Check out the collections, which include many new and updated collections, at http://myheritage.com/Halloween

AI & COPYRIGHT

James Tanner’s recent Genealogy’s Star blog post “Can AI Images and Text Ever Be U.S. Copyright Protected?” discusses a 2025 U.S. court ruling (Thaler v. Perlmutter) that established that works created entirely by AI cannot be copyrighted because they are not made by a human author. This is good news for genealogists, as it means that we can safely create and use AI images without having to worry about copyright infringement, but bad news in that AI art creators can claim no right to the images they make, no matter how talented they may be at prompt-scripting. His article goes into more detail and can be found on his blog, Genealogy’s Star.

WIKITREE WEEK

WikiTree is celebrating their 17th birthday with a full week of activities (and prizes!) from November 2-8, with each day featuring a different theme—Connections, Ancestors, DNA, Technology, and concluding with WikiTreer Appreciation Day. Events have been added to the ConferenceKeeper calendars, and you can see an overview of the whole week at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:WikiTree_Week

NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

NOW ON YOUTUBE: October’s Culture Conversation with Michael O’Malley has been posted to the NGS YouTube Channel. O’Malley is a Professor in the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University, and is the author of “The Color of Family: History, Race, and the Politics of Ancestry.”

MEMBERCONNECTS: This week, Wednesday, November 5 at 8 pm Eastern, NGS members are invited to attend a special Zoom program with Bennett Greenspan, the founder of FamilyTree DNA, looking back on 25 years of commercial DNA testing. An email with registration info was sent to NGS member, or members may email Kate Smith, NGS Associate Director for Organizations and Communications to request one.

GENTECH TOOLBOX: Cyndi Ingle (of Cyndi’s List) will be the Toolmaster for the November 19 workshop, “Organizing Your Data, Files, and Research Life.” Space is limited for the live workshop, with recordings also available for purchase. Details for upcoming and past programs, at https://pxl.to/NGSGenTechToolbox

CONFERENCE: The 2026 NGS Family History Conference will be held 27-30 May 2026, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In recognition of the Semiquincentennial Anniversary of the signing of United States Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776, our theme is America at 250. The conference will shine a light on the stories, communities, and research strategies that help us understand the nation’s past. It also will focus on how genealogists can preserve our family histories for the future. Watch for registration to open a little later this year. https://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/
