This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — just good info of interest to genealogists!)
IOWA RECORDS
The State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI) partnering with Ancestry.com will digitize more than 1 million additional State Archives records, including Iowa vital records; state military files, including Iowa National Guard enlistments and WWI & WWII casualty files; and Iowa State Prison records, including convict registers, Bertillon cards and mug shots. Iowa residents can access the records for free at SHSI Research Centers. The records will also be available online to Ancestry subscribers and will be added on a rolling basis.
IGHR FOR FREE?
The Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research is looking for folks who’d like to be Zoom Keepers for the 2026 courses. Those selected will receive complimentary registration for their course. Applications should be submitted by Feb 28, 2026. Details at https://ighr.gagensociety.org/call-for-ighr-2026-zoom-keepers/
MEMORIES IN METADATA
Vivid-Pix just announced a fabulous update to their already wonderful Memory Station Software. This new version not only transcribes your spoken words into text, it saves that text within the photo’s metadata. Your stories and memories are actually embedded within each digital photo as text. It will transcribe 130 different languages. You can use the Memory Station Software with your existing scanner or with your already-digitized photos and easily create engaging, shareable videos. Personally, I appreciate that it isn’t another subscription, just a one-time purchase (AND it’s on sale for 50% off right now with coupon code FF2025) Take advantage of the free trial to see how easy it is (great tutorials, and it’s really simple!) https://www.vivid-pix.com/memorystationsoftware/
REGISTRATION OPEN!
Registration is open for the National Genealogical Society 2026 Family History Conference “America at 250,” to be held May 27-30. It will be held in Fort Wayne, Indiana, home of the second largest genealogy library in the US – the Allen County Public Library. Register for either in-person or virtual (not live -streamed, but recordings will be available via the Whova app, 48-72 hours after the sessions occurs + bonuses). Several events and tours are also planned for those attending in-person — you don’t want to miss this one! Read all about it and register at the conference website at https://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/
TWO SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINES ANNOUNCED
The Donn Devine Memorial Scholarship will cover full tuition for one week-long 2026 GRIP Genealogy Institute course, either virtual or in-person. This scholarship is open to everyone. The deadline to apply is January 10, 2026. https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/competitions/devine-memorial-scholarship/
The John T. Humphrey, CG, Memorial Scholarship covers enrollment in the NGS course Advanced Skills in Genealogy—the enhanced and expanded successor to the original NGS Home Study program. Applicants must be members of the National Genealogical Society. The deadline to apply is January 10, 2026. See the scholarship page for full details. https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/competitions/humphrey-memorial-scholarship/
MASTER GENEALOGICAL PROOF
Mastering Genealogical Proof by Thomas W. Jones is on sale in the NGS bookstore for 30% off through January 7. No code is needed. From the book’s page, click “Purchase Now” and the discounted price is shown. NGS members should log in to the NGS website first to receive the additional member discount. https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/mastering-genealogical-proof/
CONFERENCE DISCOUNT FOR MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS
A benefit of organization membership is the ability to have up to three leaders, volunteers, or employees attend the Family History Conference at the discounted individual member rate per person if those individuals are not members of NGS. More information will be available on the Conference website once registration opens, and I’ll be sure to provide that link here in future newsletters as well!
SOCIETY & ORGANIZATION MEMBER BENEFITS
One of the discussions at this past week’s NGS Office Hours for society delegates was about society and organization member benefits. Is your society taking full advantage of membership? You can find a link to the Society & Organization Member Benefits Guide on the Delegates & Admin page of the NGS website. The most important announcement (in my humble opinion only, of course) was that society and member organizations will be able again in 2026 to request one, free, 30-day sidebar ad on ConferenceKeeper, by emailing me your 3″x2.5″ ad art, the URL you’d like it to direct folks to when clicked, and the start date you’d like for your 30-day ad. You can email me at info@conferencekeeper.org with any questions (about the free ad).
