2026 FAMILY HISTORY HILL DAY
The Records Preservation and Access Coalition is organizing Family History Hill Day in Washington, DC on April 15, 2026, giving family historians a chance to speak directly with lawmakers about the importance of records access and preservation and how genealogists rely on records. The first training takes place virtually on February 25. Learn more and register at https://www.recordsadvocate.org/register-for-family-history-hill-day-on-15-april-2026. Learn more about RPAC at https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/records-preservation-access-coalition.
‘SIMPLE’ SEARCHING, STILL MORE RESULTS!
Just when you thought you’d found everything you can on FamilySearch’s Full Text Search , they go and add yet ANOTHER way to search. “Simple Search” is currently still in FamilySearch Labs and allows you to search using plain language rather than filling out a form. I’ve found this is an excellent way to try to locate how two families might have ended up connected by searching the patriarchs’ names together. It’s given me clues to where families may have migrated from, and overall LOTS of results that I haven’t yet seen just using the Full Text Search. Best of all, I think I may be on the trail of another Rev War patriot now! I know… there goes your weekend 🙂
WHO OWNS THE RECORDS?
Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court is moving forward on a four-year-old question of whether 18 million digitized PA records (like birth & death certificates, military records, and records of enslaved people) must be free for everyone to see under public record laws, or if they can be kept behind a paywall at Ancestry (currently available only to paid subscribers and PA residents). Several interesting arguments have been raised – more details in this fairly short article: https://www.newhopefreepress.com/2026/02/18/who-owns-pas-digitized-history-were-a-step-closer-to-an-answer-2/
ALONG FOR THE RIDE
While nothing can compare to attending RootsTech in person, attending virtually is easy and completely free. And thanks to Projectkin and Geneabloggers, you don’t have to miss out on the excitement of the in-person experience (and you can stay in your jammies!). The two groups recently partnered on the 2026 RootsTech “Ride Along” campaign and have launched a new website, RideAlongPartners.org. This free site is open to everyone and creates multiple ways to cut through the noise of social media to find RootsTech-centric stories. Now, conference attendees have a fun way to share what they’re seeing and learning, both on-site and online. It’s going to be fun!! Read all about it at https://open.substack.com/pub/projectkin/p/go-to-rootstech-with-ridealongpartnersorg
TABLE OR BOOTH?
Rumor has it that this year’s RootsTech Expo Hall will be the largest EVER. Great news for in-person folks, but also for those attending virtually – all the exhibitors will also be in the online expo hall too! Will your society or business have a booth or table at RootsTech? Let me know! I’d love to give a shout-out in next week’s newsletter for other readers to be sure to check it out. Please send a quick email to info@conferencekeeper.org, and if you know your booth number or area you’ll be located please include that as well.
COUSIN CONNECTING PART 2
If you checked your Relatives at RootsTech last week, you might check it again. And again. And again. Last week I had 833 Relatives at RootsTech (individuals who had signed up for 2026 RootsTech either in person or virtually who are related to me based on the FamilySearch Family Tree.) This week my ‘cousins’ have reached over 8,000, with dozens more showing up every day. It’s a great reminder that our ‘family’ is so much larger than we may have imagined, and we’re most likely all connected in one way or another. Relatives at RootsTech will only be available until April 30, 2026. https://www.familysearch.org/en/connect/
EARLY ACCESS
The recorded virtual programs for RootsTech will become available on March 4 – before the main conference begins! If you haven’t already, sign up for free virtual attendance, and start making your playlist from the course schedules so you’re ready!
