This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)

OHIO PATRIOTS DATABASE

The final results are now posted for Ohio’s Revolutionary War Veterans Grave Project. More than 570 volunteers helped record over 4,300 gravesites in 1,400 cemeteries, adding more than 8,000 photos. The new online tools let researchers search the records, view grave photos, view the maps, and learn more about the veterans buried across Ohio. Read more and explore at https://www.ohiohistory.org/revwarvets_finalresults/

HIDDEN FOR 100+ YEARS

Over 100 mortuary record books dating back to the 1890s were discovered when Duggan’s Serra Mortuary in Colma, California, closed. The records contain “genealogy gold”: death dates, birthplaces, burial locations, family information, and obituary clippings. Volunteers with the San Mateo County Genealogical Society are now indexing the records and posting the index online at smcgs.org, where anyone can search them. If you’d like to help, or would like more info about the project, email research@smcgs.org

MASSIVE COLLECTION DONATED

Renowned Jewish genealogist Miriam Weiner has donated her massive, five-decade archival collection to The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This historic collection features rare Eastern European archive inventories, ancestral town maps, photographs, and unique surname lists that aren’t available anywhere else online. The museum plans to remodel its library to house the materials and will eventually host her award-winning website, making these incredible resources searchable for family historians. FREE AI RESOURCE FOR JEWISH RESEARCH

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Toronto has shared a free AI Resource Library for Jewish genealogy research. It includes guidebooks and ready-to-use prompts that can help with tasks like reading old records, translating Hebrew or Yiddish, studying headstones, planning research, and organizing family history clues. This resource is is 100% free and open to the public – no membership or prior AI skills needed. Details and access instructions at https://jgstoronto.ca/

“SATISFIED” WITH THE STORIES?

What does the hit musical Hamilton have to do with family history? In a new blog post on UpFront with NGS, authors Sunny Jane Morton and Kimberly Powell discuss how the themes of Hamilton mirror the exact storytelling choices, missing records, and perspective biases that genealogists deal with every day. It’s a fun read and may inspire you to look closer at the gaps in your own research and decide to be the one to write your ancestors’ — and your own — stories. Everyone can access the UpFront blog at https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/

ACCESS ENDING WEDNESDAY

If you registered for the 2026 NGS Family History Conference, please note that access to the recordings is available in the Whova app through this coming Wednesday, July 15.
