This Week’s Genealogy News
October 31, 2026

(Mentions of ANYTHING in our News are
unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)

ALL TREATS, NO TRICKS

This weekend, through Sunday (Nov. 1),  MyHeritage is offering free access to more than 1.7 billion death, burial, cemetery, and obituary records across 449 collections worldwide. Grab that bowl of Halloween candy and look for those missing dates, residences, burial places, relatives, occupations, and other clues about your ancestor’s life. https://blog.myheritage.com/2026/10/unearth-your-family-history-with-free-access-to-death-records-this-halloween/

MUMMY DEAREST?

Because some of our ancestors’ stories just aren’t strange enough, FamilyTreeDNA has refreshed its article exploring DNA connections to real mummies—from Egyptian royalty to Ötzi the Iceman and other ancient remains. If you’ve tested Y-DNA or mtDNA, you may find that your haplogroup is shared with one of these ancient individuals, pointing to a distant paternal or maternal ancestor in common. https://blog.familytreedna.com/dna-mummies-genes-and-screams/

DRAFTED!

Fold3 has added 1.4 million Korean War-era draft registration records and images from Alabama, Connecticut, Minnesota, and Mississippi. Whether your ancestor served or not, they were required to register and provide great details and usually signatures as well. https://www.fold3.com/blog/new-korean-war-era-draft-cards-added/

DNA 360°

MyHeritage has launched DNA 360°, a premium DNA test. While the standard MyHeritage DNA test uses 2x Whole Genome Sequencing, DNA 360° reads the genome at about 30x coverage. Find out more at https://www.myheritage.com/dna360/about-dna360/

MEET FAMILY HISTORIAN 8

Family Historian 8, genealogy software for organizing and managing family tree data, is now available. While already packed with great features including advanced source templates based on Elizabeth Shown Mills’ Evidence Explained, this new version adds Smart Folders, FamilySearch integration, new mapping tools, and an optional AI Connector that can work directly with a tree project. A free 30-day trial is available. https://www.family-historian.co.uk/press/family-historian-8

CALIFORNIA SHAKES, 23ANDME SETTLES

California has secured a $6 million settlement resolving claims tied to 23andMe’s 2023 data breach, which affected nearly 7 million customers. The settlement also ends the state’s challenge to the bankruptcy sale of customer genetic data; customers retain the ability to request deletion of their data and destruction of stored samples. https://nydailyrecord.com/2026/10/20/california-settles-23andme-data-breach-claims-for-6-million/

. . .

Plenty of treats in this week’s news — and no tricks! Hope you find something good hiding in those records this weekend. As always, please send your questions, comments, corrections, and concerns either by the CONTACT form on the website or by email to info@conferencekeeper.org. Thank you! – Tami Osmer Mize
