JEFFERSON–HEMINGS: FREE ACCESS TO NGSQ SPECIAL ISSUE

Recently DNA research from the Smithsonian has added evidence supporting the conclusion that Thomas Jefferson fathered Sally Hemings’s children. Twenty-five years ago, the National Genealogical Society Quarterly devoted a special issue to this question, showing how genealogists used records, DNA, and careful analysis to weigh the evidence. The National Genealogical Society is now making that September 2001 issue available free to everyone for a limited time. Read the NGS blog post to learn more and find the link to the special issue: https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/2026/11/25-years-later-revisiting-ngsqs.html

RESOURCES FOR NATIVE AMERICAN FAMILY HISTORY

November is Native American Heritage Month, and the National Genealogical Society has shared a list of places to look for Native American family history records. The article points to census records, tribal rolls, newspapers, and research guides from sites including FamilySearch, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives. Explore the links here: https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/2026/11/native-american-heritage-month.html

MEET GAIA, MYHERITAGE’S NEW RESEARCH AGENT

You might remember hearing about MyHeritage’s GAIA (Genealogy AI Agent) back in March when it previewed at RootsTech. It’s been in beta testing since, but just this week, My Heritage announced GAIA’s  official launch. Using plain language, you describe what you’re looking for, and GAIA searches MyHeritage records and public web sources, follows leads, and presents findings with supporting sources for you to review. It is available in English on desktop and mobile browsers. MyHeritage subscribers receive a complimentary usage allowance, with paid plans for extended use. Learn more about GAIA at https://blog.myheritage.com/2026/11/introducing-gaia-myheritages-groundbreaking-genealogy-ai-agent/

GENEALOGY SCAMS

AI has become a welcome tool for genealogy research, but as always, there are folks who are finding ways to use it for genealogy scams. Denyse Allen of Chronicle Makers keeps a running list of genealogy-related AI scams, explaining how they work and what you can do to protect yourself. The list is updated monthly: https://chroniclemakers.com/ai-genealogy-scams/

A NEW LOOK

JewishGen has unveiled their new website, with an updated design that makes its genealogy records, thousands of databases, research tools, and other resources easier to find.  You can search records, explore ancestral towns, and find resources for Jewish family history research, but you’ll need to create a free account and log in to access search results. Take a look at the redesigned site: https://jewishgen.org/
