This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
COUSIN CONNECTING
One small part of RootsTech that I look forward to is Relatives at RootsTech — a free tool from FamilySearch that checks your family tree against the trees of other people who signed up for RootsTech to see if you’re cousins. It’s available now, and usually stays available through the month of RootsTech, sometimes a little longer. You can sort your list of relatives by their location, by your common ancestor, or by family line, and you can search your list easily as well (which can be handy if your relative numbers grow to the thousands). It’s exciting to watch your relative count increase as the conference gets closer, and even more fun to discover that your friends may also be relatives! Maybe we’re related! https://www.familysearch.org/en/connect/
FREE ACCESS UNTIL FEB 16
FindMyPast is offering free access to their newspaper collections from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland & Republic of Ireland until Feb. 16. https://www.findmypast.com/
TRY IT FOR FREE
Vivid-Pix is offering a free trial of their Memory Station software – no credit card required. Just download and see how easy it is to add your stories right into the metadata of your digitized photos and even create videos of several photos together to tell your story. You’ll find the free trial here: https://www.vivid-pix.com/product/memory-station-home-edition-free-trial-for-win/
GEN-FED 2026
The Genealogical Institute on Federal Records (Gen-Fed) application window for their 2026 registration drawing is open now through February 20. (The Institute will be in-person at the National Archives, Aug 30 – Sept. 5.) The live drawing will be on Saturday, February 21st. See the website for full details and be sure to read the “Registration FYI”. https://www.gen-fed.org/
THINK YOU KNOW FULL TEXT SEARCH?
Hopefully you’ve tried FamilySearch’s Full Text Search already, and hopefully, like me, you’ve found lots of new and interesting details about your ancestors. But did you know that if you go to a FamilySearch Affiliate Library or FamilySearch Center and perform the exact same searches from their computers, you may get twice as many results or more? (I had no idea!). This post by John Reid of AngloCeltic Connections explains how & why: https://www.anglocelticconnections.ca/2026/02/06/get-more-hits-on-full-text-search/ And you can find your nearest FamilySearch location easily here: https://locations.familysearch.org/en/search
NEW ONLINE DATABASES
Wornall/Majors House Museums has launched a new Enslavement Record database of the Missouri–Kansas border areas. The database is a valuable genealogical tool which contains public documents related to enslavement, with a special focus on legal records that include the names of enslaved people. These records can provide insights into the lives and conditions of those who were enslaved. New documents will continue to be added and existing documents will be researched to help provide more understanding of slavery and its impacts in the Missouri-Kansas border areas. You can read more and search the new database at https://wornallmajors.org/slaveryonthewesternborder/
JewishGen announced their 2025 year-end update for their Memorials & Plaques database (MPD), which has added approximately 13,000 records and 4,000 photos from 32 sources worldwide. The MPD database includes the data from synagogue memorial plaques, yizkor lists, congregation memorials, founding member and officer plaques, war memorials and rolls of honor, Holocaust memorials, deportation memorials, memorials from local conflicts, etc. Information from these memorials/plaques may include dates of birth, death, patronymic information, towns, military ranks, etc. The MPD database is at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Memorial/
