FAMILYSEARCH + AMERICA250

FamilySearch announced its collaboration with the America250 campaign by launching a dedicated web page that offers info and instructions on how to contribute to the FamilySearch Family Tree, share personal stories, nominate individuals as American Heroes, receive assistance at a FamilySearch center, and access answers to common questions. Throughout 2026, FamilySearch centers and affiliate libraries across the U.S. will host America250-themed activities. See the new web page at https://www.familysearch.org/en/campaign/page/america250

IAJGS VOLUNTEERS @ ROOTSTECH

The International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) is looking for volunteers to help answer questions and welcome visitors at their booth at RootsTech in Salt Lake City March 5-7. If you’d like to help out and connect with other researchers—while still having time to enjoy the conference—please let Emily Garber (Vice President, IAJGS) know by February 15 at emilyhgarber (at) gmail.com.

NEW JERSEY MARRIAGE RECORDS

New Jersey marriage certificates for 1953 are now available on microfilm for in-person research at the New Jersey State Archives, which is open by appointment only. Links and details on how to request an appointment are at https://www.nj.gov/state/archives/index.. For mailed and certified copies of post-1950 marriages, you still need to go through the Department of Health. FamilySearch has a searchable name index of NJ county marriage records 1682-1956; and Internet Archive has a New Jersey Marriage Index, 1901-2016 which contains all brides from 1901-2000, and most but not all grooms.

ILLINOIS’ INSANE

Here’s another great reason to join societies where your ancestors lived! Members of the Illinois State Genealogical Society now have access to the Index of the Insane in the State of Illinois, 1870, which includes over 3,000 names that were enumerated in the 1870 Census and listed as “insane.”
