Irish Ancestors Study Afternoon

Join genealogist Chris Paton on 29 June for three masterclasses, with a Q&A after each. Chris will explore Irish record sets – both on-site and online, and explain how to tackle research challenges. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, and the full session will be recorded for you to watch in your own time.

BIG NEWS FROM THE NGS CONFERENCE!

I’m still glued to my computer watching conference presentations! I’ve learned so much already, and can’t wait for the recordings to be up so I can catch the programs that I’ve missed — not usually an option with an in-person conference. They just announced some BIG NEWS (while I’m writing this) — The 2025 National Genealogical Society Family History Conference will be in-person once again, held over Memorial Day weekend – Friday to Sunday, May 23-26, 2025, in beautiful downtown Louisville, Kentucky at the Galt House Hotel. Something to note is that the conference will be entirely self-contained within the Galt House, with no hiking back and forth to a convention center!

FREE FOLD3 ACCESS THROUGH MONDAY

Fold3 is offering free access through May 20th, to their collections of more than 600 million records including pension records, draft registration cards, unit histories, photo collections, and more. Find your free access here.

NEW PHOTO SCANNER IN MYHERITAGE APP

MyHeritage has added yet another pretty awesome photo tool to their mobile app — a multi-photo scanner. This will be a huge help when visiting relatives who pull out their photo albums but don’t want to (or can’t) remove individual photos for scanning. Just snap a pic of an entire album page full of photos using the MyHeritage smartphone app, and the app will separate them into individual pictures. Then, also right in the app, use some of the other great MyHeritage photo tools to enhance and even animate your photos if you’d like. Your photos are uploaded automatically to your MyHeritage account, where they can also easily be downloaded to your phone or computer. Read all about it on their blog here.

SEARCH 1.4 BILLION NAMES!

Speaking of websites with great databases for genealogy research, did you know that American Ancestors by NEHGS offers a 3-month membership? I sure didn’t (but joined this week)! This is an affordable and excellent way to check out all of the member benefits, including access to their databases including 1.4 billion searchable names on AmericanAncestors.org; free access to databases from external organizations including NewspaperArchive, 19th Century U.S. Newspapers, The New York Times, and many more; plus still more member benefits. Check it out here.

UGA SUMMIT OF EXCELLENCE

The Utah Genealogical Association’s Summit of Excellence virtual conference will be Sept. 5-7, and is a virtual smorgasbord of genealogy education. Thursday Sept. 5 is the FREE Getting Started day of programs; Friday’s evening keynote will be given by J. Mark Lowe; and classes on Friday and Saturday are sorted into different tracks focusing on DNA, records, different ethnic groups, writing, technology, international research, migration research, and military research. Registered attendees will have access to all recordings, so you won’t miss anything. Details can be found here.
