A CALL FOR ACTION

Access to New York State vital records has been in the news lately, highlighting the incredibly long delay folks have been experiencing when trying to obtain copies of vital records from the state. While checks are cashed quite promptly, many have reported delays of many months, to even years, before receiving the requested records. The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society has published a “Call for Action Regarding Access to New York State Vital Records,” which outlines the upcoming FY 2026 budget proposal attempting to address these issues, its impacts, and specific steps for you to take action on your own, including signing a community-wide letter the NYG&B has created for their upcoming Senate testimony on this topic and/or submitting your own written testimony (with a template prepared for you if you’d like to use it). This is an important issue that affects research in New York state, and your input is requested by February 10, 2025. Read the full details, here.
