This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate. It’s simply good info.)
I think, genealogically speaking, that this is my favorite time of the year. You can almost feel the excitement in the air with all the plans and goals being set. Everything from organizing your photo collection, to writing up those family history stories, to finally finding that elusive ancestors (I’m coming for you, Milo Allen!). In terms of ConferenceKeeper, it’s always exciting to me to see all the societies and libraries getting in the spirit as well, and posting their program schedules for the year (or at least the next few months).
Of course the “BIGGIE” is the Legacy Family Tree Webinars list of webinars for the coming year! They’ve all been added to our calendar, and, of course, I’ve already registered for several! But the easiest thing is to go to their website here (NOT an affiliate link), peruse the list and click on the “Register for free” buttons. They generously make most of their webinars freely available live and for 7 days following, but honestly one of the best investments you can make is an annual subscription which gives you 24/7 access to all 2,325 webinars and 9,074 syllabus pages. A bargain at $49.95 a year full price, watch for half-price sales for new members at various times throughout the year (and I try to keep you notified of those!). (As always, this is just my opinion and not a paid ad.)
I spend a fair amount of time reflecting and planning myself, which resulted in a change/update to our newsletter & blog sponsorship advertising. I’ve been a bit frustrated with the wonky text wraps that often occur, so now those image+text ads will be a single image which includes the text (and still linked to the sponsor’s website). For those who have reserved sponsorship dates in the future, please check the updated advertising information under the Home button on the website (also here), and I’ll also be emailing you during the week prior to remind you. There are still several sponsorship dates available, too. The newsletter reaches about 6,400 engaged genealogists, and has a wonderfully high open rate (thank y’all!) averaging around 51%, so it’s a great way to reach genealogists with your genealogy event, product, or service! And as always, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new sponsor ad image issue!
Speaking of input, and circling back to planning for the new year, what would you like to see added or improved to the ConferenceKeeper.org website this year? Email me at tami@conferencekeeper.org, or use the “Contact” tab on the website’s menu bar at the top. The team (and by ‘team’ I mean ‘me’, or I…) reads every email!
And… Oh! That reminds me — it’s our birthday this week! ConferenceKeeper.org turns NINE years old on Monday (Jan. 6). Thank you sincerely for your continued input, ideas, submissions and corrections, your patience, support, your social media likes & shares, and especially for telling your friends & societies about ConferenceKeeper.org!
Now back to the genealogy news for the week 🙂
GEN-FED DATES ANNOUNCED
The Genealogical Institute on Federal Records will be Aug. 10-16 this year, in Washington DC. Gen-Fed is an annual week-long institute held in person at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) building in Washington, D.C. The program is limited to around 40 students, and is best for those with upper-intermediate to advanced-level genealogy research experience. Registration is expected to open in February, but the date isn’t set just yet. Find out more about Gen-Fed here.
If you’re considering applying for the institute, you should also apply for the 2025 Richard S. Lackey Memorial Scholarship, which will award $1,000, which will cover full tuition for Gen-Fed and part of the cost of accommodations. Applications are due by January 31 — details here.
THOUSANDS, MILLIONS, AND BILLIONS! HIGHLIGHTS OF 2024
Both FamilySearch and MyHeritage featured articles this past week highlighting their accomplishments for 2024. Here’s a brief recap, with links to the original posts:
FAMILYSEARCH.ORG:
FamilySearch’s blog highlighted some of their achievements of this past year in a recent blog post. In 2024:
> 285 million visits were made to the FamilySearch.org website.|
> Over 150 million people were added to the FamilySearch Family Tree (now 1.67 billion searchable people), and 530 million sources added. (Great to see more sources than people added!)
> 2.5 BILLION new searchable records and images were added this year, totaling 20.5 available billion records!
> 12 African countries now have searchable indexes in the African oral genealogies collection.
> 45,000 books were added to the FamilySearch Digital Library, bringing that total to over 630,000 free, full-text searchable historical publications.
> 324 new FamilySearch Centers were added, bringing the worldwide total to over 6,500.
> Over 4 MILLION folks attended RootsTech either in person or online. Over 500,000 participated in the “Relatives At RootsTech” app experience. (I always meet new cousins this way!)
The article also mentions volunteer projects and the FamilySearch Labs use of artificial intelligence to refine the index to the Labs’ additions of 100 million images of 19th century US land records and deeds. (If you haven’t already, you absolutely MUST try out FamilySearch Labs’ Full Text Search — you need to be signed in with a free account)
You can read the whole article here.
MYHERITAGE.COM
MyHeritage celebrated their 20th birthday this year, and really celebrated all year with major website improvements and additions that we genealogists benefit from.
> OldNews.com, MyHeritage’s site for historical newspapers, launched this year, and 317 million newspaper pages were added.
> 11.9 billion records extracted from historical newspapers were added, with 16 collections of Names and stories were published to MyHeritage, covering all 50 U.S. states, as well as Canada, Australia, and the U.K With the help of AI, these are easily searchable so you can easily discover stories and events that shaped your family’s history.
> MyHeritage acquired MesAieux.com, a leading family history website in Quebec that’s a goldmine for those looking for French Canadian records.
> Lots of photo tools were created to both make your life easier and to have a little as well! One is the addition of the Multi-Photo Scanner to the MyHeritage mobile app, an AI-powered tool that allows you to scan several photos or entire album pages in just one pass and then automatically detects, crops and straightens each individual image.
> LiveMemory™ was introduced, and takes a still photograph and turns it into an short video, and then enhanced with custom animations. More than just a head turn or a smile, this AI powered program fully animates entire scenes.
> 485 million new family tree profiles were created on the MyHeritage website.
> 1,169 helpful articles were added to the MyHeritage Wiki.
> 3.8 million photographs were uploaded.
> 13 BILLION historical records were added
See the full blog post, with more details to understand the extent of these awesome additions, along with a few short videos here.
