AI & THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION FILES
BIG news this week came from the US National Archives and FamilySearch, who announced that through a partnership and with the use of artificial intelligence (AI), have extracted text for all 2,322,137 pages of the Case Files of Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Applications Based on Revolutionary War Service, ca. 1800 – ca. 1912 on the NARA website. When you find and open a file of interest, look for the “Extracted Text” button in the top row of options. Read the full article, with links to informational videos, here.
MORE BIG NEWS
MyHeritage released an amazing new photo enhancement program this week: MyHeritage Live Memory will turn any still photo into a 5-second video, using advanced deep learning technology (AI). It’s currently only available on the MyHeritage mobile app, and you can try it for free. I’ve had so much fun with it — my favorite is this photo of my dad as a young boy, boxing with a neighbor kid (Frank Shardy) in about 1934 — I think I’ve watched it a hundred times. I’m amazed at the dust that their feet kick up as they spar! My daughter showed this to dad (now 100), who then proceeded to tell her about the neighbors who had come to northeast Ohio from Hungary… Photos really can inspire great conversations, and these generated videos even more so!
Read the MyHeritage blog post for full details! (Full transparency here: MyHeritage has provided me with a free account and sneak peeks of their newest developments. This, however, does not influence my honest opinions, and I do not receive anything for mentioning or providing links to their website.)
NEW SEARCH TIPS VIDEO
I made a quick video this week about how to find events on the ConferenceKeeper calendars. I’ve had more than a couple emails from folks who couldn’t find things lately, so hopefully this will help you search for the topics or speakers you’re looking for among the 2,000+ events on the calendar! Take a minute or two to watch, and be sure you’re getting the most from the calendars! https://conferencekeeper.org/search/
NEW BOOK
Kenneth Marks, a newspaper research expert well-known for his wonderful website “The Ancestor Hunt,” has published a new book titled “Finding Your Ancestors in Historical Newspapers: A Practical Guide to Improving Your Online Newspaper Research Results.” You can find it on Amazon.com.
NEW VOLUNTEER PROJECTS
I added two new volunteer projects from the National Archives to the ConferenceKeeper Volunteer page. The first is Inmate Case Files, July 3, 1895–November 5, 1957, US Penitentiary, Leavenworth, with files containing all kinds of details on the individual inmates and most include a mug shot. The second is a transcription and tagging project for Revolutionary War Pension Files, which consist of applications and other records pertaining to claims for pensions and bounty land warrants. Yes, these are the same files processed with A.I., but they still need some human eyes on them to be sure the transcriptions of the old handwriting are accurate. Find these and others on our Volunteer page.
CONTEST EXTENDED
The entry deadline for a giveaway from Ancestral Findings to win a copy of “They Came in Ships: A Guide to Finding Your Immigrant Ancestor’s Arrival Record” has been extended to Nov. 24. Details are on our Contests page.
FREE DOWNLOAD
American Ancestors is offering a free download of their guide for family history writers “The Basics of Genealogical Formats,” which will help you understand various ways to present and organize your numerous ancestors when writing about your family history. Request The Basics of Genealogical Formats Download here.
