This Week’s Genealogy News:

NEW GENEALOGY SCHOLARSHIP!

The Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG)’s Education Fund’s Debbie Parker Wayne Memorial Scholarship provides a guaranteed seat and covers registration for one student for next year’s Putting Skills to Work workshop. They’re looking for applicants that “demonstrate a genuine passion for researching family history and a commitment to improving their skills through quality education.” Next year’s workshop will be held in person in Louisville, KY, on May 23 as part of the National Genealogical Society’s 2025 Family History Conference. Details about this particular scholarship can be found here. Be sure to check our the ConferenceKeeper Awards, Grants & Scholarships page for more opportunities like this!

THINKING OF GOING PRO?

If you’re considering seeking genealogical certification (CG) through the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG), you might be interested in joining the upcoming “Certification Practicum” group for advanced study preparing for certification, hosted by Jan Joyce. A free information webinar will be held tomorrow, Sunday, Oct 20 at 7 pm Eastern. More about the practicum here. Register for the webinar here.

ROOTSTECH DISCOUNT

The early discounted price of $99 for a 3-day in-person pass to 2025 RootsTech in Salt Lake City ends on October 31. As in the past, there will be a few contests giving away free passes, and if you win your original registration can be refunded so go ahead and register. I’ll try to keep on top of all those giveaways too!

NEW VOLUNTEER PROJECT

If you’ve got ancestors who died in England in the period of 1540-1790 and a few minutes to spare, Check out the new project “The Material Culture of Wills: England 1540-1790” on our Volunteer page, and spend some time helping transcribe wills. Being able to read cursive and maybe even Old English script will be helpful. The best part is that you might get lucky and discover records from one of your relatives! Check it out here.

RUNNING NUMBERS

In response to an email inquiry from a society this week, I ran an informal query on the number of conferences & annual seminars occurring over this past year and which months were most popular. September and October were the busiest two months for these major genealogy events, while May and July were the quietest. Just thought I’d share that little tidbit of info with y’all. I’m always here to support societies, so don’t hesitate to email me!

PODCASTS & YOUTUBES

A couple of podcasts and one new YouTube channel have been added to our… you guessed it! our Genealogy Podcasts and YouTube pages. Two had been submitted a couple weeks ago, but I’d been meaning to totally revamp those two pages (similar to the Volunteer page re-do), but haven’t had the time just yet. Soon… very soon 🙂 The latest YouTube channel addition is Family History Enthusiast, and the three newly added Podcasts are Speak On It! History & Genealogy Conversations with Janice & Cherekana; Genealogy Explorer, Megan Bullock; and The Ties That Find. Know of other genealogy-related programs that should be on our list? Email me at info@conferencekeeper.org, or use the submission form found at the BOTTOM of either our Podcast or YouTube channel pages.
