SUMMIT OF EXCELLENCE + FREE DAY

The Utah Genealogical Association‘s 2024 Virtual Conference “Summit of Excellence” is this week, Sept. 5-7. The main conference is Friday and Saturday, with a really diverse lineup of speakers and topics. Thursday, Sept. 5, is the FREE Getting Started Day, with five free presentations on as many different topics – really something for everyone. Full details and registration are on the website, here.

SEPT 9 DEADLINE APPROACHING

I mentioned in a past email about upcoming changes at FamilyTreeDNA, and the need to move any family trees you have there over to MyHeritage by September 9, 2024. After this date, family trees on the FamilyTreeDNA website will become read-only. Details are on the MyHeritage blog here. Roberta Estes created instructions and a short video/webinar on her blog DNAExplained on how to move your tree. I followed her instructions and it was a breeze!

DEADLINE EXTENDED

The Southern California Genealogical Society has extended the deadline on their call for proposals for their 2025 Webinar series. Submissions are now due by noon Pacific time on Sunday, September 15.

“VIRTUAL” OPTION

The ISBGFH British Institute will be held in-person in Salt Lake City, UT, this coming October. Although it will not be live-streamed, recordings and syllabi of the events are also available to purchase, and will be available after the event for those who can’t attend live in Salt Lake City. This is why you’ll find it listed also on our Virtual calendar.

GOT A SPARE MINUTE OR TWO?

A new volunteer transcription & indexing project has been added to the Volunteer page. The Israel Genealogy Research Association is currently seeking volunteers to transcribe and index English language online records. Record types include marriages, burials, registries, and even infectious diseases. IGRA warmly welcomes the support of volunteers who can transcribe in English from all over the world! To sign up:

  1. Please go to the CSI: IGRA landing page and click on “sign up” at https://csindexing.com/igra.php
  2. Fill in your information.
  3. On the sign up form where it says “Select Your Group” make sure to select “IGRA- Jewish Database Indexing in English” from the drop down menu.
  4. You should receive acceptance into the group within 48 to 72 hours
