ALL of the upcoming genealogy events.
This week’s email is sponsored by the British Institute
There is nothing quite like being in person for a British Institute course!
Each morning for five days, you will join others who are eager to learn and share your interest in one of these courses.
Immediately after, you can apply what you learned at the FamilySearch Library with your newfound friends.
Now is the time to decide which course you most want to take! Recordings are also available. For details, visit our website at isbgfh.com/bi.
This Week’s Genealogy News:
FREE ACCESS LABOR DAY WEEKEND
ShipIndex.org is offering free access to their complete database for the first time ever, over Labor Day weekend, Saturday, August 31, to Monday, September 2, 2024. Learn more about the ships your ancestors traveled on. Details at https://www.shipindex.org/
TWO BY DR. THOMAS JONES
The Northwest Suburban Genealogy Society is hosting a special free, virtual workshop with two lectures by Dr. Thomas W. Jones, both with Q&A, on September 7. Guest registration opens this weekend – create and sign in to the website as a Guest to be able to register. Consider joining the society to also receive handouts and access to recordings!
NEW WWII WEBINAR SERIES
The National Council on Public History has an upcoming, free, series of 5 webinars focusing on the American Homefront during World War II. The topics include Environmental History, Native American and Indigenous, LGBTQ, Disability and Latino. Online registration ends August 29.
GENEALOGY SPEAKERS
Societies and libraries are getting their schedules ready for next year, and there are many Calls for Presentations open; several are due by September 1, which is just over a week away (where did the summer go?!). Be sure to check the Deadlines section below and keep an eye on our Calls for Presentations page!
SPEAKING OF DEADLINES
Be sure to check out the list of other looming deadlines a little farther down this page also — Lots of event registration, contest, and application deadlines are next Saturday, August 31 and this is my last opportunity to mention them! Take advantage of earlybird discounts to save a significant chunk of change when registering for events like the East Coast Genetic Genealogy Conference (hybrid), the Connecticut Society of Genealogists‘ Annual Family History Day, CAGGNI’s GeneaQuest Conference and others!
A NEW LOOK FOR JAMBOREE
The Southern California Genealogical Society has made a slight change to their annual “Jamboree” conference. In celebration of their 60th anniversary, their new SCGS Genealogy Jam conference will occur several times each year to highlight speakers and topics specific to one area of research. The first event will be Saturday, October 12, with “Discovering Our Southwest Heritage,” to include California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado and Texas. The event will be online with viewing available in person also at the SCGS Library. Details here.
ALL ABOUT THAT PLACE
All About That Place now has a dedicated website where you can learn all about All About That Place. Find details on speakers and schedule of events and more. There’s also a new bitesize Armed Forces Advice Hour competition — you’ll find more about that on the AATP Facebook Group .

I’m happy to share one new benefit of membership in the National Genealogical Society which was announced at the meeting: All organization members will be given one 1-month (30 day) sidebar ad on the ConferenceKeeper.org website each year, beginning in 2025. Ads may be used for a special event, call for papers, or even just an advertisement for their organization — it just needs to be genealogy related. With this, and other valuable membership benefits, I definitely encourage societies to become part of the NGS family. Find out more about society member benefits on the NGS website.
