This Week’s Genealogy News:

It’s definitely summertime. Not only are the cicadas, heat, and hurricanes obvious signs here on the East coast, but so many genealogical societies and libraries seem to take a break before starting up again in the Fall with new calendars of events and planning their 2025 programs. But there are still about 2,000 genealogy events on the calendar! Plus, there are three new Calls for Presentations this week too. Be sure to peruse the list of new events (see below).

NEW PODCAST

A new program was added to the Podcasts page this week. “Low Ancestry” whose tagline is Uncovering how ordinary people with ordinary lives have extraordinary stories to tell. Check it out here or see all the genealogy podcasts on our list at https://conferencekeeper.org/genealogy-podcasts/

NEW COMMUNITY HUB

There’s an interesting new initiative underway on Substack: MissionGenealogy.org. It’s still in private mode, but the plan is to create a free community space that’s an alternative to the noise and distraction of social media. MissionGenealogy is a collaboration between Robin Stewart of Cuzens Genealogy Matters and Barbara Tien of Projectkin.org to help grow the Genealogy community on Substack.com. They’ll have podcast interviews of genealogists talking about their work, a Zoom round table to discuss current topics live, and regular Office Hours sessions to help fellow family historians get comfortable on the Substack platform. There’s even a community page that uses Substack’s referral engine to help us find each other. Visit MissionGenealogy.org/openhouse for a special “open house” event on August 20 to learn more about MissionGenealogy and Substack.

SAVE $50

The early registration discount ends August 17th for the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) 2024 Virtual Professional Management Conference. Register soon to save $50 — the discount is for both members of APG and non-members. The conference will be held 19–21 September 2024, virtually on Whova. Whether you are just beginning your career or are a seasoned professional, the 2024 PMC program has content that will help you. Conference information and registration can be found here.
