This Week’s Genealogy News:

HELP WITH THE FT-DNA UPDATE

Last week I mentioned the need for folks to move their trees from FamilyTreeDNA over to MyHeritage (for free) in the near future. Roberta Estes has written an excellent blog post and created a recorded webinar with step-by-step instructions on how to accomplish this. Her posts include mentions of possible issues that users may encounter as well. You can find links to both the instructions and the video on her blog DNAeXplained – Genetic Genealogy.

OLD NEWS IS GOOD NEWS

I love using newspapers for genealogy research, and recently started looking for mentions of my elusive ancestor, Milo Allen, in MyHeritage’s OldNews newspaper collections. The first appearance on this planet that I’ve been able to find for Milo is his marriage record in 1841, in Akron, Ohio. Census records state his birthplace as New York, but it’s a rather large state and I had no clue where to begin looking for him. My big win this week was finding an obituary for his wife in a small town NY newspaper (Warsaw, Wyoming County, NY) in 1891, even though she died in Ohio. One sentence of this brief four-sentence notice had me doing the happy dance and has given my research a new direction. It says “Mr. and Mrs. Allen lived in Warsaw more than 50 years ago.” That would put both Milo and his wife in Warsaw, NY, in 1841 — most likely just before their marriage and move to Ohio. I’m so glad MyHeritage added this resource to their site! (Please remember, none of my posts contain affiliate links — just sharing good genealogy info!)

A LITE/BUDGET VERSION OF ANCESTRY.COM

A hat tip to Ian at EasyGenie who noticed a new subscription tier at Ancestry this week. For as low as $6.49 a month (an introductory offer), new users who are happy just using their mobile phones to research can access global vital records, have one customizable tree, and up to 10 hints per week. The option doesn’t show up if you just go to the regular pricing page, but Ian provided a link that he says only works on some browsers for some reason. I found it to work on Chrome and Edge – If you’re interested, see if you can access it here. (You can see a comparison of subscription prices for several major websites on EasyGenie’s PriceTracker, too.)

LOTS OF NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY!

  • NGS CULTURE CONVERSATION
Everyone is invited to attend the next National Genealogical Society (NGS) Culture Conversation, a free virtual program featuring NYTimes best-selling author Mark Russ Federman at 8:00 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday, 7 August 2024. Russ will discuss family history from the perspective immigrants in New York, and the Jewish food experience in New York City starting with Joel Russ, a Polish-Jewish immigrant selling pickled herring from a pushcart on the Lower East Side. Attend and learn more about the food and culture that add so much to the American experience. https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIvf–gpjIoE9wxNt9uI2BmiU5Wtx2SDjHU#/registration
  • GRIP 2025 COURSES
Everyone may attend the Facebook Live on August 2, at noon Eastern for the announcement of the GRIP 2025 course offerings. Rumor has it that there are several new courses along with a few returning favorites. The week-long courses will be held Virtually: 22-27 June 2025, and In-person: 13-18 July 2025.
  • NGS OrgCONNECT WITH STEVE LITTLE
The first organization-outreach webinar, OrgConnects, will be August 1. NGS AI Program Director Steve Little will be discussing Artificial Intelligence, and how it can relate to and benefit societies, answering questions such as what type of AI-related education does your organization need, and does your org want to create a special interest group on AI and need technical training for a leader, a train-the-trainer concept, and more. There will also be a short conversation and then open Q&A so NGS can plan for how to support your organization regarding artificial intelligence. Member organization administrators and delegates should have received emails with details for registering for this free webinar. If you’d like more information, use the Contact Us form at https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/contact-us/
  • 2024 NGS BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION
All National Genealogical Society members and organization member deletages should have received an email on July 19 with instructions on how to access the slate of candidates and amendments to the Articles of Incorporation, as well as how the online voting will be conducted. If you haven’t received an email about this or have questions, contact Membership at NGS.
  • ACCESS REMINDER
Access to the recordings and handouts of the NGS 2024 Virtual Family History Conference for those who registered will end August 15. You really don’t want to miss out on any of these truly excellent presentations.

YOUR INPUT REQUESTED

I’m considering including societies’ major seminars, workshops or other all-day events in the list under the “Conferences” tab on the website, even though they technically aren’t conferences. This would add a little bit more visibility to these major events, which could be a good thing both for those wanting to attend and the event hosts. I’d appreciate any input you might have on this! Email me at info@conferencekeeper.org with your thoughts on this (or anything else that would make your experience on ConferenceKeeper.org better).

OTHER UPCOMING DEADLINES

I’ll be out visiting dad in Arizona this coming week instead of being glued to my computer collecting genealogy events and news, so I’d really appreciate your event submissions and any news tidbits of interest to genealogists that I can share next in next week’s newsletter. You may reach me through either the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org – and as always if you have any questions, corrections, comments, or concerns, please let me know (I just might be responding a little slower than usual). I really appreciate your input!
