I’m publishing this just a little earlier than usual because of a couple June 1 deadlines you might not want to miss!

SATURDAY JUNE 1 DEADLINE

I realize that many folks may not see this until Sunday or beyond, but just a reminder that Saturday is (was) the last day to purchase a pass to access all of the session recordings and handouts from the recent NGS2024 Expanding Possibilities Family History Conference. Along with seriously high-quality education on many different research topics, there are several sessions on Artificial Intelligence (like it or not, it’s here, and it’s going to be a huge part of our lives!). More about the access pass here.

NEWS FROM SALT LAKE INSTITUTE OF GENEALOGY – 2024 FALL VIRTUAL

Registration is open for UGA’s 2024 Fall Virtual and there’s good news for those who were interested in Gena Philibert-Ortega’s quickly sold-out Course 1: An Advanced Study of Death: Cemeteries, Death Records, and Material Culture.  A second Session, Course 1B, has been added and will meet on Thursday evenings from September 12 to November 14.  For more info, see the SLIG website at https://slig.ugagenealogy.org/cpage.php?pt=651 and scroll down to Course 1B.  Hopefully there will still be space available for those interested – and if not, there are several other fabulous courses available – all are virtual and meet just one day or evening a week, from mid-September to mid-November.

NEW BOOK ON FORENSIC GENEALOGY

A new book titled “Forensic Genealogy – Theory & Practice” by Michael S. Ramage and Catherine B. W. Desmarais, was announced at the recent NGS conference. Pre-order now — shipping is anticipated late this summer.

What is forensic genealogy? From the book description: “Forensic genealogists apply genealogical methods to help resolve an expanding array of legal issues. They provide research to help settle estates, clear real estate titles, establish citizenship eligibility, and locate heirs to mineral rights, copyrights, and trademarks. They resolve unknown parentage, restore names to unidentified individuals, assist the armed services to find families of missing service members from past wars, and provide leads to help law enforcement solve violent crimes. Learn more in this comprehensive, practical guide to the new era of forensic genealogy.” Details and pre-order on the NGS website.

DOLLY’S FAMILY ALBUM

To be honest, I never truly appreciated Dolly Parton until I moved to the South, and heard all the wonderful accounts of her generosity and kindness. I’m not a huge Country Western music fan either, but I am very much looking forward to her upcoming 50th studio album, titled Dolly Parton & Family: Smoky Mountain DNA – Family, Faith & Fables. The album release will also be accompanied by a 4-part documentary series, which looks into her family history, tracing both her mother and father’s families, from their roots in the UK to their migration to the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. You can read more about it here: https://dollyparton.com/life-and-career/movies-television/dolly-parton-family-smoky-mountain-dna-family-faith-fables-set-for-release-november-15-via-owepar-entertainment

TIME TO EXPLORE?

You probably know ConferenceKeeper.org has the most complete calendar of genealogy events available, but have you taken the time to explore the website to see all of the other helpful pages and features? Most folks tell me they’re surprised when they finally realize what all is available. There’s much more than just the big colorful buttons — Take a moment to look through the tabs in the green menu bar at the top of each page, and particularly under the “Other Events and Opportunities” tab. I strive to make the site as helpful a resource as possible! Let me know what you think… info@conferencekeeper.org
