I’ve got LOTS of interesting news tidbits for you this week! And don’t forget to keep scrolling down to see the full list of 211 new events added to the calendar this week!

🔵 CAUGHT MY EYE (A SURPRISING SOURCE OF INFORMATION)
The Rhode Island Historical Society has a free online program coming up on Feb 29 (Corrected!) Depositing History: The Old Stone Bank Digitization Project, which talks about the records of the bank from both a genealogical and historical perspective. “The bank’s records reveal the birthplaces and families of thousands of Irish, Italian, Scandinavian, Eastern European, and Azorian immigrants. Even African Americans who left the South during and after the Civil War list their birthplaces.” Who would have thought?! If you have Rhode Island ancestors, this is a must attend — and if you don’t, consider how and where you might find similar records of your ancestors in banks! https://www.rihs.org/event/love-our-collections-depositing-history-the-old-stone-bank-digitization-project/

🔵 NEW LEVEL 2 A.I. COURSE
This month the National Genealogical Society launches Level 2 of “Empowering Genealogists with Artificial Intelligence.” Instructor Steve Little will guide students in the design of effective prompts and the creation of personalized GPTs. Opportunities for live prompt problem-solving will be included in each of the four weekly sessions. Live classes will be January 31 and February 7, 14, and 21 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. A recorded version of the course will also be available, with the opportunity to attend Live Q&A sessions. Prerequisites are completion of the Level 1 course or a minimum of 20 hours experience with ChatGPT. See the full details at https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/ai/.

🔵 AN AMAZING WOMAN
You won’t want to miss the upcoming, free, Culture Conversation with A’Lelia Bundles on Family and Historical Research being presented by NGS on 7 February 2024 at 8:00 p.m. (ET). Ms. Bundles is the biographer and great-great-granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker, who, according to Wikipedia, “was an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist. She is recorded as the first female self-made millionaire in America in the Guinness Book of World Records.” Among many other accomplishments, Bundles founded the Madam Walker Family Archives, the largest private collection of Walker ephemera, photographs, and memorabilia, and authored On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C.J. Walker. This promises to be a wonderful program! Register (free) here.

🔵 ROOTSTECH SPEAKERS & SCHEDULE
This week RootsTech announced the latest keynote speaker, who will be Nancy Borowick, “a world-renowned Sony Artisan photographer, speaker, and teacher, with a unique gift and talent for capturing the moments to not be forgotten.” Two previously announced keynote speakers are comedian Henry Cho and Lynn M. Jackson, president and founder of the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation.

Other RT news this week is that while the RootsTech schedule of classes and events is officially being launched Monday (Jan. 29), it appears to be live on the RootsTech.org website already, for both virtual and in-person classes for this year’s event. Be sure to create an account and log in (totally free) so that you can make a playlist for virtual and save your schedules! If you just can’t wait for this year’s event to begin, you can always click on “Watch Videos” in the upper right of the page to view hundreds more videos from previous years.

🔵 IGHR COURSES
The course descriptions for 2024 Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) are now available online. There will be 13 virtual courses. Mark your calendar and set an alarm: registration begins March 9 – https://ighr.gagensociety.org/2024-ighr

🔵 ANOTHER SOCIETY CLOSING
The Grants Pass Genealogical Society (Oregon) has shut down after 55 years. They plan to keep their Facebook and website pages available. The Rogue Valley Genealogical Society generously has offered GPGS’s 2023 members a complimentary one-year membership in RVGS. Societies need members, but even more, they need volunteers! How are you supporting your local society? How can you share your time and/or talents?

🔵 ON THAT NOTE…
The Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois is in need of a newsletter editor. This is a volunteer position, and you must be a member of GSSI. If you’re interested, please contact the president at president@ilgssi.org

🔵 JANUARY PROGRAM & SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINES

🔵 IF YOU EMAIL ME...
I always reply to emails! If you send one and don’t receive a response within a day or two at the most, please check your spam folder. I’ve found that’s where my replies often end up. I try to reply from a different address to combat that, but in my haste to reply, sometimes I forget to change my “from” address. Feel free to email me multiple times if you need to — I don’t mind, and always prefer to get things right!

And of course, as always, if you have any questions, corrections, comments, or concerns, please let me know! You may reach me through either the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org .
