THIS WEEK

I spent some time visiting dad this week in Arizona, and flew back to NC mid week — It’s been a busy week! But I’ve still managed to add 154 new genealogy webinars, programs and more to the calendar this week. As usual, there are lots of interesting titles, and a few I’ve never seen before. Be sure to scan through the list over on the Blog page to see which you might want to register for.

This week’s news is really just some highlights and tidbits, but I hope that you find them of interest 🙂

> RECOGNITION

I was thrilled to discover that Family Tree Magazine (the US based one) has included not one, but TWO mentions of ConferenceKeeper.org in their September/October issue (pages 6 and 9). I really appreciate being recognized as a “SITE TO SEE.”

> THERE’S NO SUCH THING, RIGHT?

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I encourage folks to attend, join, and participate in genealogical societies and particularly their discussion groups. (Two heads – or more – are always better than one, right?) If you’ve been hesitant to try one out for whatever reason, the Ventura County Genealogical Society in California has an online Zoom discussion group/workshop coming up that might be for you – it’s the Ask a Stupid Question workshop, on Wednesday, Sept. 27, and it’s free and open to all. Ask your question, or just learn from others’! https://venturacogensoc.org/

> RESEARCH ‘ROUND THE WORLD BASIC

FamilySearch will be hosting four Facebook Live “Getting Started with Research” session, on Germany, Ireland, Sweden and Brazil. You can watch live on their Facebook page on Sept. 13. https://www.facebook.com/familysearch/events

> SHARE YOUR STORY

The organization America250 is collecting stories of what America means to you. As genealogists, many of us are deeply rooted in the history of this country, while many are or descend from immigrants. So now is the time to think about what this your ancestry in America means to you! They’re looking for your contribution in the form of a photo, video, poem and other formats. Details are at https://america250.org/share-your-story

> MORE WAYS TO SHARE YOUR STORIES

I had a lovely call with my friend Barbara Tien this week. I  love  her passion for family stories and finding ways to share them that will actually engage current and future generations. We talked about what she’s been up to since the Ponga platform she had co-founded has shuttered, and I realized that, while there are often several “post-Ponga” webinars on ConferenceKeeper, many folks might not know what they are about, so I asked her to help me explain. Barbara said, “After winding down the Ponga platform, I realized that our community had been one of the most compelling elements of the platform. I also realized that our members had come to us with an interest in using digital media to capture family history stories. The challenge was to capture those stories while remaining true to principles key to family history like privacy and archiving.

The result was the creation of the post-Ponga community which hosts free events, articles, and a private forum. Though the name is temporary, the idea is to continue and grow the community started at Ponga with something where members can learn from each other and share ideas for family history projects that combine storytelling with modern digital media and tools.”

This community is basically a group of folks trying to find the best ways to use technology to share family stories, photographs and more with family – current and future. You can check it out – all are welcome! See https://postponga.com/

Thanks so much for your support, comments, suggestions, and especially corrections. Your input and help is always truly appreciated! You may reach me through either the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org Have a great week!
