This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate. It’s simply good info.)
First off this week, I’d like to welcome all our new readers & genealogy friends who have found ConferenceKeeper on Substack! I’ve started sharing the newsletter there weekly as well, to share the weekly news and let more folks know about all the wonderful events on our calendar. There’s a growing family history community there, with lots of excellent writers! It’s a different kind of space, and I highly recommend if you’re just getting started on the platform, to follow Mission: Genealogy and Genealogy Matters to help you navigate your way.
FREE ACCESS THIS WEEKEND
Newspapers.com is offering free access to Publisher Extra papers through Monday, Feb. 17 at 11:59 pm MT. I’ve found and saved off many newspaper articles mentioning my ancestors during past “free” events, and suspect I’ll be spending some time again this weekend. Free access details here.
ROOTSTECH UPDATES!
>The popular cousin-connecting program ‘Relatives at RootsTech‘ has officially launched for 2025. Log in to either the website or the FamilySearch app and choose “Relatives at RootsTech” to see how many folks that are related to you in the FamilySearch Family Tree have signed up for RootsTech. It can be surprising to find fairly close cousins (2nd, 3rd) that you weren’t aware of, or to find out that you are related to your friends or co-workers (even if it is 10th cousin, five times removed…). It also reminds you that your family history isn’t really ever ‘done,’ especially if you see 7,000 relatives in your list and don’t recognize any of them! Sign in to your FamilySearch account and check it out here.
>A Last-chance sale on in-person passes will be Feb. 17 – 24. if you haven’t gotten your in-person pass yet, this will be your last chance to purchase at the discounted prices of $99 for the 3-day pass and $69 for a 1-day pass to attend RootsTech at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, Utah. (Attending virtually is free).
>Advanced and Professional Track: While RootsTech is definitely a great place for folks new to family history research to learn, this year they’ve also called out an “Advanced and Professional” Track for those who are beyond the rank of beginner. I’ve already added several to my RootsTech schedule and playlist! Find the track listings here.
MEMORYWEB SHUTTING DOWN
A fairly popular photo organizing program, MemoryWeb, has announced they will end service on March 17, 2025. Their announcement includes details on how users can download their photos and metadata, as well as information on how to obtain a refund on paid subscriptions. The notice also mentions that they are “pivoting” the company to a new app called Photo Flipz (which appears to create a sort of before/after effect using two photos). You can read the full announcement here.
REGISTRATION IS OPEN!
Author Nathan Dylan Goodwin’s Genealogical Crime Mystery Writing Course is now open for registration. The course is open to all levels of writing ability – even absolute beginners! You’ll learn all of the elements making up a genealogical crime mystery. The course begins on Tuesday 4th March 2025 at 8pm (UK time) and runs live on Zoom each week. Attendance at the live sessions is recommended but not mandatory as they will be recorded. Full details here.
GENEALOGY BOOKS PAGE
The response to my announcing a new “Genealogy Books” page on ConferenceKeeper last week was fast and abundant! I quickly realized that it would be best to create two separate pages — one for nonfiction and one for fiction. (Even though I’ve been a voracious reader my entire life, I’ll be the first to admit that those two terms have always tripped me up, so… fiction=stories, nonfiction=facts). You can find the page links under the “Other Events and Opportunities” tab in the top, green menu bar. If you (or your society or organization) have written a book related to genealogy or of specific interest to genealogists and family historians, I’d love to add it to the lists. The submission form can be found on either of the Books pages, under the Submissions tab in the menu bar, or directly at https://pxl.to/BookSubmissionForm .

I apologize for delays and any omissions made this week – Covid completely knocked me out for about five days, almost exactly five years since my first bout in 2020. Then I crashed the website for several hours mid-week while working on the new Books pages (probably shouldn’t have been doing that with Covid brain!). I’m glad the week is behind me with plenty of time for full recovery before I head to RootsTech! But it’s definitely a reminder that the nasty virus is still out there running amok. With that in mind, I’ll be wearing my mask again in airports when I travel. I hope y’all are staying safe and healthy 🙂 As always, feel free to send questions, corrections, comments, or concerns to me through either the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org. I always appreciate submissions, updates, corrections and suggestions!
