SUPPORT FOR SOCIETIES

Judy G. Russell, “The Legal Genealogist,” wrote an excellent blog post this week titled “The returns of the 2025 season,” in which she suggests genealogists might use cash from returned holiday gifts to support struggling state and local genealogical societies. Supporting societies has always been one of my top priorities these past 10 years of running Conferencekeeper. Societies are so much more than just a monthly meeting, a free webinar, or an annual seminar — they’re collections of local history and personal archives, and repositories of family papers, photos, and histories. Often members have deep roots in the community and know just where to find local info on unmarked private cemeteries or the collected correspondence and papers of the town’s first historian.

It always makes me sad when I see a notice of a society shutting down. This year we lost several that had been around for a long time. Just to name a few: Central Jersey Genealogical Club – 31 years, West Central Missouri Genealogical Society – 55 years, Pomona Valley Genealogical Society (CA) – 70 years, and then there’s the California Historical Society – 154 years.

But cash isn’t what societies need the most — they need members, and even more so, they need volunteers, folks who are willing to help out where needed whether it’s taking on an officer position or spending time in their library, or any of dozens of things that are needed to keep a society running.

You may have noticed when events are listed on ConferenceKeeper, that they almost always point you back to the society (or library’s) website for details, rather than just giving you the name of a webinar and the zoom registration link. Visiting their website or seeing what a society has to offer is probably the least you can do in return for all the great programs you might be attending. I think almost every society website I’ve been to (and I’ve been to a LOT) offers something unique to their area, whether it’s a collection of local photos, a transcribed local database, or just the knowledge of the long-time local members. Some societies offer wonderful membership benefits, including access to otherwise costly online databases, newspaper sites, and more, with membership being a mere fraction of what a single subscription to any one of these would cost you. I’ve joined societies that offer an hour or two of free local research by a volunteer. ALL societies are full of people just like us — rabidly passionate about genealogy, family history, records, resources, photos and stories.

So I guess what I’m saying here is please consider joining a society or two this coming year. If you attend several of their free online programs consider donating a few dollars or a few volunteer hours. Don’t just be a genealogist; be a part of the community that preserves the very documents, records, photos and family histories that you seek.
