. . . . . .

There’s a lot of news & info to share this week so I’ll get right to it – but as always I just want to mention that the following information is all just me passing on to you some of the good stuff I came across this week. It’s important to me that you know that I’m not being paid to promote anything or event — and if the case is ever otherwise, I am always extremely clear about it.  I receive no compensation for any of the program mentions, and the website survives almost entirely on the kind donations of users (seriously – if everyone chipped in just about 17 cents (maybe a little more to cover PayPal’s fees) all our expenses would be covered for the year! There’s an easy donate link at the bottom of this page, btw)  Anyway – here’s what I did and found this week:

FASTER IS BETTER

After noticing some issues on the website this past week, I spent some time (and some money) working on improving the website’s page loading speed, so your user experience should hopefully have improved quite a bit, with much faster page loading times!   If you’re still experiencing slow page loading in general, be sure to clear your web browser’s cache, which basically stores everything you’ve looked at on the internet since the last time the cache cleared (which for some folks may be never).  For Google Chrome, it’s easily accomplished, by going to the upper right corner where you’ll see three vertical dots. Click the dots, scroll down to “More Tools” (click) and then look for “Clear Browsing Data.” (I usually check all of the boxes except Download history) then click “CLEAR DATA.” You may have to sign back into any subscription sites, but overall your web surfing should speed up and any other issues may resolve themselves too.

GENEALOGY FUN

Thomas MacEntee will be leading a fun FREE genealogy program hosted by the Leominster Public Library on Feb 1 – “”Who’s Behind Those Foster Grants?” Genealogy Escape Room.”  You can play along by doing a little ‘homework’ ahead of time, or you can just watch events unfold and learn about the research process. Full details and links for research forms and registration are at pxl.to/y3wd2n2s

BRITISH RESEARCH?

The Society of Genealogists (UK) has submitted a couple dozen fascinating programs this week on a variety of topics, from genealogy concepts like DNA and research techniques to various aspects of British research . Don’t be afraid of costs being in British pounds – the US cost is just a little bit more, and most payment options (credit cards, PayPal, etc.) will handle the conversion for you (which currently is just under  x1.25, so £10 will be a little less than $12.25 if my calculations are correct and things don’t change too much in the next couple of hours or so).

EARTHQUAKES IN ARKANSAS

I’m always interested in stories about earthquakes, having lived through my fair share of some of the state’s biggest shakers in the 40 years I spent in Southern California.  For this reason, stories of a massive earthquake that caused the Mississippi River to change direction always fascinated me, and this upcoming free webinar caught my eye: “Arkansas Angles on the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811-12” hosted by the Arkansas Heritage Seekers Genealogy Society this coming Monday, January 23, at 6:30 pm Central time. It is being given by Jonathan Todd Hancock, author of the book, “Convulsed States: Earthquakes, Prophecy, and the Remaking of Early America,” and will focus on responses to the New Madrid Earthquakes in present-day Arkansas.  Topics include evidence of ancient earthquakes in the region, Quapaw and settler responses to the shaking in 1811 and 1812, and the New Madrid Relief Act of 1815 and its consequences in central Arkansas.  The link to the Zoom session is sent to their email list and posted to their Facebook page on the morning of the meeting. You can join the email list by going to https://heritageseekersar.com/subscribe/

ZOTERO THE MAGNIFICENT

I’m really looking forward to a webinar on Feb 4 from the Bucks County Genealogical Society: “Zotero for Genealogy – Harnessing the Power of Your Research Part 1.” The webinar will be presented by Donna Cox Baker, the author of the book “Zotero for Genealogy,” in which she explains how to use a really powerful graduate-studies-level research tool (Zotero)  to organize all of your genealogy files, documents and everything – online, on your computer, in  your filing cabinet and on your bookshelf. I’ve started using Zotero to index the contents of an entire file cabinet of family history that my dad “gifted” me before he moved after reading the book and also listening to a couple of Legacy Family Tree webinars done by Colleen Robledo Greene on the topic.  What’s so special about this program? Well first, it’s free. And second,  Zotero stores, organizes, indexes, annotates, and cites information, linking to or attaching sources. Imagine going to research someone in your tree, typing the surname into Zotero, and immediately having access to the whereabouts of or links to or images of every document, book, digital file, or website you’ve already collected for that person!   The BCGS program (part 1) will be Feb 4, and is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Members may register earlier than non-members (so yes, I joined the society 😊).  Part two will be Saturday March 4.  More at https://www.bucksgen.org/

STILL MORE REASONS TO JOIN YET ANOTHER GENEALOGY SOCIETY

The Western Massachusetts Genealogical Society is presenting a four-part (once monthly) genealogy basics program for members only.  The program is not just for folks new to research, but for those wanting to refresh their skills. The course will be taught by Peggy Clemens Lauritzen, who, if you’ve heard any of her presentations, is absolutely brilliant and a wonderful teacher. https://pxl.to/f5rmyno

CONTESTS

At last count there were about 18 RootsTech in-person pass giveaways live on our Contests page! This week we also added another great contest to help with a Danish research project, so be sure to check out the page (and see below for the new contest).  Hopefully you are also on the email list that receives this info weekly as well — email subscribers occasionally get bonus contests, like today.  I’ve got another coming in a couple weeks or so too, so be sure to sign up. I don’t spam and you’ll only receive one email a week.

As always, please don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at info@conferencekeeper.org if you have any suggestions, comments, or questions.  Have a great week!
