TWO NEW SCHOLARSHIPS:

The Board for Certification of Genealogists announced two new scholarship to participate in national genealogical institute programs this week, bringing the total to three scholarships being offered by BCG. These include 1) A scholarship for an applicant under the age of 40 (must be under age 40 on 15 March). 2) A scholarship for an individual who is currently “on the clock” having submitted the preliminary application to become a Certified Genealogist and 3) The Paul Edward Sluby Sr. African American Scholarship.

Scholarships will award up to $1,700 of the tuition, travel, and lodging expense of attending one of these four premier national institutes.

  • Genealogical Institute on Federal Records (Gen-Fed)
  • Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP)
  • Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research (IGHR)
  • Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG)

The Sluby Scholarship is also eligible for the Midwest African American Institute (MAAGI)

In addition, BCG will also waive its final application fee of $300 for scholarship recipients who submit portfolios of work to be considered for certification within three years of the announcement of an award. Full details and application instructions.

Applications for scholarships are due annually on 15 March.  You can find links and details for these and other genealogy-related awards, grants, and scholarships on the ConferenceKeeper page at https://conferencekeeper.org/grants-scholarships/

TELL A FRIEND

This week I’ve added several “Beginning Genealogy” webinars from several different sources, as well as a few titled “Genealogy 101” and “Genealogy Essentials”.  While you’re probably already past the beginning level of genealogy (and more than likely have moved on to the “Obsessed” level 😊), these programs are perfect for beginners. Remember to let friends and family know how easy it is to learn how to “do genealogy” and point them to ConferenceKeeper.org to find free online (and offline) webinars and courses.

PLANNING AHEAD

For those who really like to plan in advance – or hate to possibly get left out – The South Dakota State University Extension is planning a free online program in October 2023: Heirlooms: Creative Life Writing Workshop – Ancestor Writing. “This workshop is for people who are interested in going beyond their ancestors’ birth and death dates. This is for people who want to tell the stories of how their ancestors lived and who they were as people.”

UPCOMING GIVEAWAYS

You’ll most likely be seeing lots of RootsTech 2023 in-person pass giveaways starting in January from those who are RootsTech “Influencers” (formerly known as Ambassadors). I always do my best to find and post these, and honestly, your odds of winning are usually pretty good, as some contests only have a dozen or so entries sometimes.

AND ANOTHER THANK YOU

Thank you to everyone who showed their support by checking out our email-sponsor last week! Please be sure to see all the interesting genealogy programs, products & services which continue to support ConferenceKeeper with ads on our website.  You can show your support by taking a moment or two to check out what new and interesting genealogy service, product or event they are offering.

As always, thank you for reading and following ConferenceKeeper.org.  I wish I could read y’alls minds enough to know what you like and dislike about the website. I truly want it to be useful. Since I can’t, please don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at info@conferencekeeper.org if you have any suggestions, comments, or questions. I sincerely appreciate your ideas!
