EVENT UPDATES!
The ever-popular Southern California Genealogical Society’s “Jamboree” is moving to October in 2023. The event notice has just been posted to our website, with the conference dates of October 6-8, 2023. The SCGS Genetic Genealogy Conference will be March 31 to April 2, 2023. Both conferences will be hybrid, with virtual and in-person attendance options. Details on both conferences will be available soon at https://www.scgsgenealogy.com/
The Indian River Genealogical Society’s meeting Dec 13 will be open to the public (it had previously been listed as members only). The program will feature Lisa Alzo presenting Immigrant Cluster Communities: Past, Present, and Future. “Cluster genealogy’ is the process of researching those relatives, friends, and neighbors who lived near an ancestor and can often break down brick walls in the search for individual family lines and help to place our ancestors’ lives in historical context.” Details at http://www.irgs.org/
Is your society having a Spring or Fall Seminar, or Conference, in 2023? Take a moment to check the ConferenceKeeper.org calendar and if I don’t have it already listed, please, please, please let me know about it – even if just a “save the date!” If your society has already posted their meeting and event schedule for the year, please let me know too — I’d love to get as many events added as possible so we can all start planning out our new genealogy year. You can use the submission form if you’d like, or if it’s easier for you, feel free to email me at info@conferencekeeper.org.
GET PAID TO GO TO CONFERENCES?
Here’s a great opportunity for a lucky APG member: The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) is looking for a Conference Booth Coordinator to start in January 2023. The position offers a more-than-fair compensation, plus event registration costs, travel, and hotel for in-person events. Candidates must be members of APG. Full details are on the ConferenceKeeper Genealogy Jobs page.
JOINING SOCIETIES
I know I must sound like a broken record (remember what that sounds like?), but you know that I’m a huge supporter of genealogical and family history societies at all level, and I firmly believe they provide valuable service to the entire genealogy community. You will definitely benefit from belonging to as many as you can afford to!
The Austin Genealogical Society is supporting our website this month with a sidebar ad, suggesting that you “Give the Gift of Ancestry.” I think membership to a society would be a wonderful gift especially for someone just getting started with their family history research, or especially for someone who is interested in testing their DNA* who will then need to learn what to do with all that data. I have always benefitted by joining societies in locations where I’m researching, and have really scored some huge brick-wall-busting wins because of them. And I just joined yet another society this week when I realized that the cost of membership was less than the guest fee for all their upcoming webinars I want to attend. *(Speaking of DNA kits, I’ll be posting a new DNA kit giveaway sometime this week. Watch the website Contests page and Facebook for the announcement)
After adding the Genealogical Forum of Oregon (GFO) December 10th webinar to the ConferenceKeeper calendar, “Access GFO Resources From Home,” I started wondering what those resources might be, and ended up checking out their membership benefits, which include discounts, lookups, and access either in their library or from home to Fold3, HistoryGeo, HeritageQuest Online and American Ancestors. And, as with many nonprofit society memberships, your membership dues are 100% tax deductible. Like all societies, full details are at their website. (And be sure to attend the Dec. 10 webinar.)
I’d love to share your society’s membership benefits — email me at info@conferencekeeper.org!
. . . . .
As always, thank you for reading and following ConferenceKeeper.org 🙂 What can I do to improve the website? the emails? I really would appreciate your input! Please don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at info@conferencekeeper.org if you have any suggestions, comments, or questions. I sincerely appreciate your ideas!
