CALENDAR or VIRTUAL CALENDAR for
ALL of the upcoming genealogy events.

. . . . . .

I’ve got lots of info to relay to you this week! First of all, another banner week, with 210 new events added. I kind of felt like that number was cheating a bit, though, since nearly 50 of those new events are multi-week courses from Pharos Tutors (listed by starting date), many beginning mid-next year. But then I thought, heck, Christmas is right around the corner — a genealogy course make a great Christmas present!  Why get another housecoat or hand mixer when you can ask your family to get you what you might really want? Consider perusing the calendar for Conferences, Institutes and maybe the Genealogy Education page, and get started on your Christmas list  😊

WEBSITE UPDATES!
You’ll notice (hopefully) that the submission form sports a small change:  I’ve added a “TIME” spot in the date entry field.  If I’ve figured this out correctly (after months of trying to figure this out, and a day of formula testing), you’ll enter the starting time in YOUR time zone, and on my end it will correctly populate that lovely list of North America time zones!  Yes, until now I’ve been copying and pasting from a chart for every submission (and it’s been honestly quite tedious), but I know it was important and helpful.  And yes, also, I’m patting myself on the back right now for getting it figured out!!

DID YOU KNOW… (I sure didn’t!)
Did you know that the Smithsonian has a separate National Postal Museum? I learned of its existence while looking for interesting genealogy webinars online. The NPM has one coming up on Nov. 2 called “In Appreciation of Letters: Their Historic and Personal Value.” The webinar will discuss details from letters written in the mid 1800s, as well as techniques for storing and handling fragile papers.  Details and registration link at https://postalmuseum.si.edu/visit/calendar?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D162445636

OCTOBER IS FAMILY HISTORY MONTH
And it shows! There are over 40 events marked as “Conferences” alone this month, and that doesn’t count Seminars or Workshops or anything else! Many of the genealogy webinar venues, both genealogical societies and public libraries, are going the extra mile to celebrate with lots of additional webinars. And since the month ends with Halloween, you’ll also notice an abundance of topics that I imagine are supposed to be “spooky”, like witches and cemeteries. If you ask a genealogist, though, neither of those are nearly as scary as the words “image not available” or “courthouse fire.”

One of these “extra mile” venues, The Genealogy Center at Allen County Public Library, has a full month of webinars planned, even more than usual. Of special note are the Wednesdays With Witcher series, presented by The Genealogy Center’s manager, Curt Witcher. His Wednesday topics include:

  • Finding the Things We Are Not Looking For: GPS, FANs, Preponderance of the Evidence, and Researching in 4-D
  • “It’s All Really Well Organized:” The Truth about What We Are Passing On.
  • Telling the Stories — Taking Advantage of the Boundless Opportunities Around Us
  • The Power of Story, and Why it Matters

LAST CALL!
October truly starts of at a fast pace and doesn’t slow down. Saturday, Oct. 1 has over 55 events on the calendar alone — classes, workshops, conferences, and more.   Two of these events have been advertisers on the website’s sidebar (and Advertisers page) for a little while now, and hopefully you’ve checked them out: The OCCGS 3rd Annual DNA Day with Roberta Estes, and the St. Louis Genealogical Society Fall Speaker Series with D. Joshua Taylor, “New approaches to Old Problems.”  One of the great features of a Virtual (or hybrid) Conference is that they often offer access to recordings from a few weeks to up to several months after the event, so you could very well “attend” more than one Conference in a day!

LAST MINUTE NOTICE
I must be slacking, because I only noticed this event Saturday, and registration ends Monday (Sept 26) for the fall offering of “The Search Party Course.” The program is presented by three very well-respected genealogists: Diahan Southard (Your DNA Guide), Crist Cowan (The Barefoot Genealogist), and Janet Hovorka (Family Chartmasters). See the details at https://bit.ly/3BHlkSW

I feel like I’m forgetting something, but that’s almost a fact of life for me on a daily basis, so I’ll go ahead and close. As always, please feel free to email me if you’ve got any suggestions or questions. You can use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at info@conferencekeeper.org. I always sincerely appreciate your input! And as always, thank you for reading 🙂
