ROOTSTECH EARLY PRICING ENDS SOON

If you didn’t win your in-person pass to RootsTech and are still planning to go, please note that we’ve just received word that the $98 pricing is actually an Early Bird price and is only good through February 17.  On February 18, the price goes up to $108 for a 3-day in-person pass. The virtual conference will remain completely free.

EDUCATION SERIES(ES)

The South King County Genealogical Society will be hosting a series of online beginning genealogy classes, a different course each month from February through June, and each will be presented twice each month – one morning session and one evening.  Courses are free for SKCGS members and $20 each for non-members… so you might consider joining the society since individual dues are $20 for the year!  https://www.skcgs.org/meetings-events/classes

The Albuquerque Genealogical Society’s 2023 Beginner Genealogy Classes will start on March 6, with Class #1: How to Begin Your Genealogy – From the Start or From Where You Are. The series will consist of five classes over five weeks, are online, and free. The programs are on the calendar, and also at the society’s website: https://abqgen.org/events/spring-2023-beginner-genealogy-class/

The Bend Genealogical Society & Library began Building Solid Family Trees, a free 8-class ZOOM series this past week. The series will be helpful for anyone whether you are just beginning your family history quest or have been researching for years.  The next 7 classes have been added to the calendar, and details can also be found at the society’s website: https://bendgenealogy.org/

FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

There are several newly added programs on African American heritage and genealogy for Black History Month in February from many well-known and outstanding speakers.  Remember, you can search for specific topics, like ‘African American’ (topics, speaker name, or any other keywords) in the top left hand box of any of the green calendars to find a more specific list of upcoming presentations. (Just refresh the page to go back to its original sorting).

LAST MINUTE CHANGE

The Fiske Library contacted me this evening that their free virtual presentations scheduled for February 1 and 8 have swapped places.  Now, on Feb 1 will be Latin 101—Deciphering Catholic Parish Records, with Mary Kircher Roddy and on Feb 8,  Precarious Lives of Free Blacks Pre1865, with Janice Lovelace. Details and registration for both are at https://fiskelibrary.org/

STILL MORE CONTESTS!

Along with at least a dozen more (and the last of the) RootsTech pass giveaways, you’ll find a new Contest added just today from Genealogical Publishing Company (GPC) and Genealogy Bargains. GPC has a new subscription platform for digital genealogy books. A subscription gives you digital access to nearly 800 titles, with more being added. Read more about this new subscription service at https://genealogical.com/subscriptions/ and see our Contests page and enter NOW to win a subscription (contest ends Monday, Jan 30).

SO MANY TOPICS!

This week I noticed what seems to be a wider variety of genealogy-related topics than usual. Researching details beyond birth, marriage & death can often yield not only more ancestors’ information, but great stories of your ancestors or at least the times they lived in.  These three upcoming hybrid presentations caught my eye in this regard:

Feb 01   History Is Lunch: Anne Martin Vetrano, “Delta Hot Tamales: History, Stories, and Recipes” presented by Mississippi Department of Archives & History     https://www.mdah.ms.gov/event/history-lunch-anne-martin-vetrano-delta-hot-tamales-history-stories-and-recipes

Feb  20  Pre-Civil War Quilts: Secret Codes to Freedom on the Underground Railroad presented by Town & Country Public Library and Illinois Humanities     https://elburn.librarymarket.com/event/midday-monday-pre-civil-war-quilts-secret-codes-freedom-underground-railroad

Mar 14  Viking Descendants—Tracing Norwegian, Swedish and Danish Ancestors presented by Bend Genealogical Society and Library     https://bendgenealogy.org/event-5138849

Peruse the full list of this week’s newly added events (below), and see what new topics you might learn about to help with your ancestor challenges!  Remember to show your appreciation in some way to the hosting societies — Become a member, send a donation of any size if you can, or even just be sure to say Thank you!

As always, please don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at info@conferencekeeper.org if you have any suggestions, comments, or questions.  Have a great week!

– Tami Osmer Mize
