This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
JUST, WOW!
Legacy Family Tree takes the prize for most and best news this week. Here are the highlights of their recent blog post:
>Legacy 10 Software: The Legacy Family Tree genealogy software is now completely free for everyone and continues to be supported and improved, again, thanks to their partnership with MyHeritage.
>Platform Overhaul: FamilyTreeWebinars.com has been completely rebuilt thanks to parent company MyHeritage. It’s now 10x faster with improved account management tools and an upcoming translation feature. Of interest to bloggers and others is a new affiliate program, increasing commissions. (I still don’t participate in any affiliate programs – What you read here is me sharing interesting news, nothing more, ever).
>Expanded Content: The LFTW webinar library has grown to over 2,700 videos and 11,000 syllabus pages from roughly 500 instructors. New specialized programming includes monthly “Deep Dives” and advanced DNA series.
>Price Increase: Starting June 1, 2026, the annual subscription price will change from $49.95 to $59.95/year.
>Discount extended!: The 50% off Spring Sale has been extended through May 31, 2026, for new or restarted subscriptions.
MEMORIAL DAY SALE
If you’ve been eyeing new genealogy books and quick sheets at Genealogical.com, they’re offering a 15% discount through May 28th, with the coupon code MDS26. It’s even good on their ‘My GPC Library’ subscription. https://genealogical.com/
FREE ACCESS
MyHeritage is offering free access to 35 U.S. military record collections containing more than 213 million historical records, from May 22 to 26, in recognition of Memorial Day. Start searching at https://www.myheritage.com/research/records-catalog/usa/military/catid-3000
DNA RECONNECTS HISTORY
Scientists 23andMe Research Institute, Harvard University, and the Smithsonian Institution recently analyzed DNA from 49 early colonists in St. Mary’s City, Maryland, and discovered genetic links to over 1.3 million living Americans. By matching this historical DNA with modern family trees, the researchers were even able to identify the unmarked graves of some of the colony’s founding figures, including what they believe to be Maryland’s second governor, Thomas Greene. It’s a great example of how modern genealogy can bring centuries-old stories back to life! Full article at https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1128357
CALLING ALL MAPES…ONE MORE TIME!
Do you have Mapes ancestors? The Mapes Family Association is now in the continuous process of reconstructing its lost database. Without your family data, it will not be recorded anywhere and will be lost which is a great concern to the Mapes Family Association Board members. We need family members who have not yet done so, to gather information about their parents and grandparents (connecting them to the Mapes line), their siblings, children and grandchildren, and forward it to Harold Mapes, Registrar, by e-mail: hmapes@hotmail.com or by USPS to 545 Alison Drive, Apt. 3, Hummelstown, PA 17036. You can also submit the Mapes_Genealogy_2023 form found at https://sewardhomestead.org/william-mapes/mapes-genealogy-form/ by email or USPS.
MORE BOOKS, MORE PODCASTS
Several new genealogy books have been added both the Fiction and Non-Fiction pages, and a couple of new podcasts & YouTube channels have been added also.
News from the National Genealogical Society
CONFERENCE COMPENDIUM: The 2026 Conference Compendium is now available to those who have registered. The compendium is your guide to all of the conference events and activities, as well as class schedule and speaker handouts. As it is for paid registrants only, a password to access the compendium has also been sent in a separate email from The National Genealogical Society Conference Team.
ATTEND VIRTUALLY: There’s still time to register to watch the 2026 NGS Family History Conference virtually. If you’d like to attend in-person, walk-in registration will be available.
WHOVA: Be sure to download the WHOVA app for all things conference-related. From there you’ll be able to plan your own personal conference schedule, RSVP for limited attendance sessions including Allen County Public Library tours and NEW interactive sessions, connect with others who will be attending, receive updates, and soon be able to access the Conference Compendium and session handouts.
CONFERENCE BLOG: Stay up to date on all the most recent news about the Conference, on the conference blog – https://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/news.

I’m regret to say that I won’t be attending the NGS Family History Conference in Fort Wayne this year as I’d planned and mentioned before. My sweet father-in-law passed away recently, and his memorial service will be that weekend, a few states away. Family first. As always, please send any news, questions, corrections, comments, and concerns either by the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org. Thank you!
