This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY APPLICATIONS

The National Genealogical Society has opened applications for the second cohort of its James Worris Moore Leadership Academy, a program designed to develop future leaders and increase diversity within the genealogy community. Those selected to participate will receive a one-year NGS membership, free registration for the annual Family History Conference, and a $250 research stipend. To be eligible, applicants should have three to five years of genealogy experience, be under 45 years old, or belong to a traditionally underrepresented group, with applications due by July 21, 2026. Full details and application info at https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/james-worris-moore-leadership-academy

MORE RESOURCES FOR PRIDE MONTH

The National Archives in the UK has updated its free online research guide, How to look for records of sexuality and gender identity history. The guide includes strategies for locating historical records from the 19th and 20th centuries, and explains how to navigate census data, court records, and wills using historical terminology to uncover often obscured family narratives. Find the free online guide at their website.

NEXTGEN VOICES

NextGen 2026 is inviting young genealogists, historians, and researchers ages 16–35 to submit proposals for its online conference on 14 November 2026. The event will highlight fresh ideas and new connections in family history, and first-time speakers are welcome. Three proposal and presentation preparation zoom programs will offer advice, on July 7, August 12, and Oct 28. Speaking proposals must be received by July 12. Further details, including proposal guidelines and support-session information, is at https://sog.org.uk/nextgen2026/

WRITE YOUR OWN FAMILY HISTORY MYSTERIES

Genealogy-crime author Nathan Dylan Goodwin has launched a new self-paced virtual course on writing genealogical crime mystery fiction. The course covers topics like character development, setting, dialogue, research, plotting, and editing, and you can work at your own pace. He’s offering a special discounted introductory price through June. Full details at https://www.thenovelguys.com/creativewriting.

CARIBBEAN GENEALOGY BOOK CLUB

The Caribbean Genealogy Library (CGL) is starting a new book club focusing on Caribbean history, culture, ancestry, and family ties, particularly those connected to the Virgin Islands. Their first meeting will be held both in person and via Zoom on July 11th at 2:30 PM (Eastern), featuring a discussion of Eleanor Shearer’s novel, River Sing Me Home. The club is open to both members and non-members, and you can register to join the discussion via Zoom. Full details and Zoom link are here.

RECLAIMING MASSACHUSETTS RECORDS

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is trying to pass a budget proposal (Section 43 of H.5377) that would severely restrict public access to vital records, closing off birth, marriage, and death records for decades. If passed, this would overturn centuries of open-access and make it incredibly really limit access to state records. To learn more about how this could impact your research and find out what you can do to help, check out the full Reclaim The Records update email.

THE STORIES OF US

Ahead of America’s 250th birthday, Ancestry’s “The Stories of US” project continues to accept and add true stories about everyday people who helped build the country. Family historians are invited to share their own ancestor or family story by uploading old photos, records, and stories about their ancestors. Read more about the project here, and add your story at https://www.ancestry.com/stories-of-us/250-stories
