This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
FREE ACCESS
Too hot / humid / noisy / crowded to be outside this weekend? Here are a couple excuses to sneak off and still celebrate:
> Fold3 is offering free access to Revolutionary War records through July 6. https://www.fold3.com/go/free-access.
> MyHeritage is offering free access to their U.S. City Directories collection, featuring 1.3 billion historical records from approximately 26,000 directories published between 1860 and 1960 – great for filling in census gaps! And in honor of Canada Day, you can freely search all 15 Canadian census collections, comprising 52.3 million historical records, free to search.
SC SLAVE MORTAGE RECORDS
American Ancestors has launched a new database, “South Carolina: Slave Mortgage Records, 1734–1864,” adding more than 137,000 names and records to the 10 Million Names Project. The database contains volume-by-volume indexes to mortgage documents by grantor and grantee names, with all records held by the South Carolina Secretary of State. It covers South Carolina only, with no town or city details included. https://www.americanancestors.org/search/databasesearch/3896/south-carolina-slave-mortgage-records-1734-1864
10 MILLION NAMES ON TV
On Saturday’s Good Morning America, Robin Roberts will share a 10 Million Names Project discovery from American Ancestors featuring the first confirmed living descendants of an enslaved person who helped build the White House, offering genealogists an example of how documentary research can reconnect families with long-obscured parts of American history. If you miss it, catch the replays on Monday, July 6:
> ABC News Live Prime with Linsey Davis, 7 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. PCT
A short version of the full special will stream on ABC News Live, Disney+ and Hulu.
> ABC News Live, 8:30 p.m. ET, 5:30 p.m. PCT
The full 30-minute special streams on ABC News Live , Disney+ and Hulu.
NATIVE AMERICAN DATABASE
The Digital Access Branch of the State Archives of North Carolina has added a new digital collection, Records Concerning American Indians. The collection focuses mainly on interactions with the Cherokee and Tuscarora Nations, along with their dealings with the State of North Carolina. You can explore at https://digital.ncdcr.gov/collections/records-concerning-american-indians

NEVER TOO LATE
The much anticipated, historic semiquincentennial is here already, and if you still haven’t made plans on how you’ll record your memories for posterity, Gena Philibert-Ortega’s new post on the NGS UpFront blog gives three very simple, very do-able ideas. The UpFront blog is free for everyone, and always shares great genealogy info, whether actionable research tips or thought-provoking ideas. https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/
NGS MAGAZINE

The 4th of July holiday always fills me with patriotic pride and appreciation for the sacrifices my ancestors made. My eyes still well up at the beautiful words of “America the Beautiful” written in 1893 by Katharine Lee Bates*, particularly the opening lines of the second, third and fourth verses:
O beautiful for pilgrim feet whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat across the wilderness!O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife
Who more than self their country loved and mercy more than life!O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years…
*you can find the full poem/lyrics at https://www.purpleheart.org/static/forms/AmericaTheBeautiful.pdf
I hope y’all remember to take a moment to appreciate our individual and shared histories. Please send any news, questions, corrections, comments, and concerns either by the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org. Thank you!
